Fiesta Bowl? Sham, Scam, or Grand Slam
Bull-Run ^ | 12/7/2009 | Bull Run

Sham:

Its the nature of the beast. The BCS is, was, and always will be a sham which is not as much interested in putting up the number one team against the number two team (or number three team and number four team) as it is in maximizing the amount of money they can milk out of their sponsors. Because of this TCU got paired up with Boise.

Scam:

No way does the BCS want to worry about Boise *and* TCU going undefeated, nor do they want a repeat of last season when Utah throttled Alabama and ended up having a legitimate claim to the throne. To prevent this both Boise and TCU will be denied a chance to show themselves off against one of the self appointed power conferences.

By putting #4 against a #6 (from non-aq conferences) and a #3 against a #5 (from AQ conferences) there is little risk of a controversy about who is #1 this year and a fight over who should be #2 will be just as much press but with far less controversy.

Grand Slam:

There is no reason to complain because at the end of the season there will be a non-aq school that is undefeated and likely ranked either two or three in the nation. The other team will still be in the top ten and the publicity this is getting will lead to far more exposure than either would have gotten if they were paired up with a team like Iowa or Georgia Tech.

TCU should be playing Cinci and Boise St should be playing Florida. It’s that simple.

Boise State fan here.

I think TCU got screwed. They should be playing Alabama.

I meant scam. No way could they let BSU Florida...it might spoil the idea that the SEC is the home of the football gods.

Should be Texas vs. TCU

1. Texas
2. TCU
3. Alabama (barely beat Tennessee and Auburn)

If your argument is that Alabama barely beat TN and Auburn, how do you put TX at number one? Its sole victory over a top 20 team was Oklahoma State, a team that got more or less exposed when it played OU.

Alabama, on the other hand, certainly has the most impressive resume—it’s beaten LSU, UF, and Va. Tech, all legit top 20 teams. Plus it dominated Florida, a team that most people thought was the best team in the country.

Looking at resume alone, I don’t see how you can put anyone but Alabama at number 1.

Sorry but the way Texas played this weekend doesn’t make them a #1 contender.

Win or lose Alabama will claim their 13th National Championship.

I would have preferred Iowa take on Boise. But we’ll take GT and the Orange bowl.

Normally, I wouldn’t know anything about this match-up, but my nephew is a senior at TCU. His dad, an Iraq war veteran, and currently civilian consultant there, is coming home for his family leave at Christmas. He and my nephew will be at the game. To say they are excited doesn’t begin to cover what it means to them.

Does anybody remember Royal as coach of UT calling TCU a bunch of cockroaches.
He said it is not what they eat but what they mess up.

Lets just remind everybody of how brutal a schedule TCU had this year:

Virginia, Texas State, Clemson, Southern Methodist, Air Force, Colorado State, Brigham Young, UNLV, San Diego State, (16) Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico.

Honestly, I forgot SMU had a program again...and who knew UNLV had a football team?

I was honestly worried that ‘Bama would have to play Cincinnati...they scare me. TCU - nope.

Have you watched TCU? Obviously not or you wouldn't be so dismissive of them. The Horned Frog's offense is the equal of Cincinnati's but their defense is far better than the Bearcats'.

BTW, how did your big bad Crimson Tide do last time they played a Mountain West team? Didn't Alabama open 2009 by getting slapped around 31-17 by Utah in the Sugar Bowl? I have a couple of friends who are really into Mountain West football and I asked them how the 2008 Utah team compares with the 2009 TCU team. They both responded that this year's TCU is far better (and one of the guys is a big Running Utes fan).

Apparently no one but myself gets it. The BCS controversy every year generates approxiamtely 2 billion in advertising for the NCAA. It’s free.

If they ever agree to a definitive format, they will have to pay for the missing advertising. Not gonna happen.

There is little doubt that TCU could run with, and likely beat, anyone in college football. I have them at #2 (because they have had a softer schedule than Bama) but I think they could settle that on the field real fast..
