How does society benefit by having these people remain alive? Anyone? Bueller?
I really wish we made more liberal use of the death penalty. My standing position is that the longest possible prison sentence should be 5 years -- and if a crime is so terrible that a mere 5 year sentence would be a grave injustice, then the perp should be executed.
We have a feral population, and I'd like to see it culled.

I find it doubly disgusting that the monster who actually did the shooting got off with the lighter sentence because she was a few months younger at the time of the crime. Plus, had they not been caught on tape at the police station laughing about their crime when they didn't think they were being observed, there is a very real possibility this would have been tried as a juvenile crime.
I can see some liberal judge ruling that no such videotaping be allowed into evidence in the future until the perps have their attorney present.

They'll be in their late 70s when they get out, if they survive prison life.
Our system is so f'd up, ya got Mexican murderers killing here, and fleeing into Mexico, and when caught down there, Mexico tells us they won't extradite unless we guarantee there will be no death penalty.
How stupid are we?
