Average wage at the plant, $70,000. Loss to the Missoula economy, $45 million. These are all union jobs, the company is closing this plant and another similar in Michigan due to high costs.

The land of hopeychangey. It is really sad to see so many hurt for no reason whatsoever. The high level of ignorance in this nation is taking it down.

It’s always sad to see a plant close and to lose jobs, but 70K a year seems high to me in Montana for a factory job.

500 jobs lost is a real gut blow to the Missoula economy. These are some of the best jobs in the area.

All out of work in two weeks. Merry Christmas.

At least the Griz are going to a real national championship game.

High paying union jobs. And I see they were also being smothered with taxes. Not only large property and income taxes, but this:

According to county tax figures, Smurfit-Stone is currently more than $2 million in tax arrears, with roughly $1.1 million of that incurred from penalties and interest from fiscal year 2008 and another $960,000 for the first half of FY 2009, which was due Dec. 7.

For years I was a supplier for that mill, been there often (knew Jodie at the Red Lion! :-) But this one isn’t a laughing matter at all ... that is one big paper mill, lots of people, relatively small community. What a shame to see this one go down.

I knew I forgot to add something... this is unrelated to the Smurfs!

However it would seem likely there will be a lot of folks feeling very blue this season in Missoula.

This is very sad, but to quote the Dear Leader, “Insulation is sexy”.

Instead of going to work every day, the workers will have time to insulate the attic, while feeling really sexy of course.

There are the 400+ workers. The supporting contractors. The restaurants. The suppliers and vendors. The churches. The grocery stores.

Many of the 400 will leave to find work elsewhere.

The entire economic chain of that town is going to be affected. Very sad.

417 workers
$70,000 each a year
so if they all took a paycut

They could have saved the factory?
