Here is raw audio of a 911 Call made by a man who drove off the road and wound up in a pond where he drowned. The man was extremely calm during the call, but by the time rescuers could arrive, his pickup sank and he had drowned.
An Orange County man was killed after investigators said he lost control of his truck and ended up in a retention pond.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Umberto Delgado, Jr., crashed into the pond around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on state Road 429, at the exit ramp to Plant Street.
Crews said Delgado had called 911 after the crash, but by the time they arrived, he was dead.
The caller did advise that he was in the water and the car was sinking, and thats about all we know at this time, said Ocoee fire Chief Butch Stanley.
Dive crews said the water was 6 to 8 feet and very dark. . . . (AUDIO)
Sad story. Life is precious.
What a terrible way to go.
Unless he was handicapped he is another candidate for the Darwin award. The time spent finding his phone, calling 911, and speaking with the operator would have been better spent getting out of the truck.
Electronic doorlocks and windows. If you drive into water, they’ll short out and you’ll be trapped. I recall about twenty years ago several older people drove into shallow reservoirs and streams in New York State and drowned in very shallow water. Many years ago I was in an accident and got trapped in the car, not because the interior of the car physically restrained me but because the doorlocks didn’t work anymore. After that, I never drive with my doors locked. And I keep a punching instrument on the dash so I can break the windows if necessary.
See my post 5. You would be amazed at how strong car doors and windows are. It’s very hard even to kick out a car window. Been there, tried to do that, it didn’t work.
Geez - what a sad story...I’ve heard it’s wise to keep some sort of tool handy - maybe a screwdriver? - in case you end up in deep water and need to break out a window. I’d be interested to hear other Freepers’ thoughts on appropriate tool(s) for the job.
kick out the front windshield is your best shot , and Don’t Panic.
911 operators, in my experience, are not very smart and rely on a template to guide their actions/advice.
In my area, I get the strong feeling that 911 operations are merely a make-work program designed to keep ghetto people from being completely idle.
Just a couple of weeks ago, in a similar story, the guy SHOT his way out of the truck.
Ears will probably be ringing for rest of life, but better than the organ music and tears....
