In a move sure to delight Cavaliers fans, Zydrunas Ilgauskas has announced his intentions to rejoin the team and has asked agent Herb Rudoy to begin negotiations with the Cavs on March 22, the first date he can do so.
"It is Zydrunas' desire to return to the Cavaliers if a suitable contract can be agreed upon," Rudoy said in an e-mail to reporters. "He has been overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of support and affection by the fans and by his teammates. He hopes to return to bring a championship to the Cavaliers and to the city of Cleveland."
Ilgauskas, 34, a first-round draft choice in 1996 who overcame a series of foot injuries to become the team's all-time leader in games played, rebounds and blocked shots, was traded to Washington on Feb. 17 in the deal that brought Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair to the Cavs.
The Wizards then bought out Ilgauskas' contract, and he cleared waivers and became a free agent Monday. The Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Atlanta Hawks were among the teams seeking his services, along with Cleveland. The Cavs have been without a true center since Shaquille O'Neal sprained his right thumb at Boston on Feb. 25.
In order for Ilgauskas to return, the Cavs would have to clear a roster spot. The most likely candidates to be waived are forward Darnell Jackson or rookie guard Danny Green because they don't have contracts guaranteed for next season.
Telfair has a player option for next season worth $2.7 million.
And the Wizards did all of this why again?
Salary dump.
Boy, am I glad they worked it out!!!!
What a joke these contract dump trades are.
