I thought wolves were shy of people.

For the most part, they're pretty elusive. If food is scarce for them that can change though. Not far from where I live someone was walking their dog, and had a whole pack of them following her. They tried coming for her dog, and it got cut up a bit. She shouted, and sprayed bear spray in an arc towards them and got them to run off.

There are times when lots of peoples' dogs turn up missing, even closer to town. They have killed people, though it isn't too common.
