Singer and guitarist Alex Chilton, who topped the charts as a teen and later became a cult hero with Big Star, died Wednesday. He was 59.

Chilton died at a hospital in New Orleans after experiencing what appeared to be heart problems, said his longtime friend John Fry. Fry said Chilton's wife, Laura, was very distressed by the unexpected death.

"Alex was an amazingly talented person, not just as a musician and vocalist and a songwriter, but he was intelligent and well read and interested in a wide number of music genres," said Fry, the owner of Memphis-based Ardent Studios.

Damn. Big Star was one of my all time favorite bands. Loved the chiming guitars; inspired me to pick one up and learn to play. He was 59....where does the time go?

Best known for his “The Letter” with the Boxtops, and for the theme of “That 70s Show”.

I seem to remember hearing that he was brought in to do the vocals for “Letter” by the Box Tops, because their regular singer wasn’t able to be there for the recording.

It’s possible.....

“A local band recruited the teenager in 1966 as their lead singer after learning of the popularity of his vocal performance at a talent show at Memphis’ Central High School; this band was The Devilles, later renamed Box Tops.”

The Box Tops were big in the late 60s. Many of us who were teenagers then have fond memories of the band, and their music.
