For Conservative Movie Lovers: Ian Fleming, Sean Connery, and ‘Goldfinger’ Part 4
Big Hollywood ^ | 04.03.10 | Leo Grin

In 1964, little-known actor Michael Caine was being evicted — again — and needed a place to stay — again. His friend Sean Connery, starting out in similar circumstances, had reached the pinnacle of the acting world as James Bond. But here Caine was, unable to pay the rent.

In desperation, he temporarily moved in with his pal John Barry, the music composer for the Bond series. Barry was a regular patron of London’s tony clubs and discotheques, and so Caine fully expected to have some good times while staying over as a guest. What he got instead was being kept up night after night by a strange tune Barry was tinkering with: two blaring notes in the key of F major, followed by a trailing melody in D flat, repeated over and over like a villainous echo:

Considering his great achievements it’s a bit strange that John Barry, in his late 70s, isn’t yet Sir John Barry. His music for Out of Africa was the best thing in the film.

I remember the commercial for the Odd Job action figure throwing his lethal hat to the Goldfinger music. Ran during the 1965 Saturday morning cartoon season, specifically during the Beatles cartoons which came on at 1030 AM. After 45 years, I still remember, hehe.

I bought the mp3 album for “Somewhere in Time”. I am wondering if they will ever remaster and expand it.

“Yes, John Barry has his OBE”

OBE is the second lowest order, and two steps removed from knighthood, and use of the title “Sir”. John Barry received the OBE award in 1999.

2008 petition to knight John Barry:

It’s probably because he reportedly lives in New York and isn’t resident in the UK. Titles are apparently a reward to celebrities for paying UK taxes! Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Michael Caine both reside in the UK.

Excellent. John Barry is the first or second greatest writer of film music in the 20th century. If he is second, the greatest would be Nino Rota.

Frankly, I think that Bernard Herrmann was the greatest writer of film scores in the twentieth century.

* and a whole bunch of other Alfred Hitchcock movies.

Just to name a few of my favorites.

For more see: Bernard Herrmann / IMDB

Breaitbart’s BIG web sites have the best writing. This is great stuff. I am not a big fan of Shirley B-R-assy though. Did he do all or most of the Bond films?

The one that most people forget about and I think is one of the best is You Only Live Twice sung by...oddly Nancy Sinatra. The melody and tune are exceptional.

Another favorite for me was Garbage with the girl singer doing The World Is Not Enough. They are rock band but the number is very theatrical with a great video too.

Ahh I see where he got loud bits for dramatic effect from Stan Kenton heavy brass. Oddly sampling keyboards, basically sysntheziers/computters, would record sounds and a sounds used heavily is the “orchestra strike” which is what Barry pretty much did during the exciting bits in Bond films.

Barry deserves far more credit that that dreadful man who rubbish like Phantom of the Opera. I cannot think of him name but he has made zillions turning out swill.

Louis Armstrong’s haunting “We Have All the Time in the World” from “ from “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (recorded shortly before Satchmo’s passing) has become my favorite James Bond theme over the years. But most of the themes from the 60’s and 70’s Bond flicks were very good.

John Barry and Nino Rota are great, but I wouldn’t rate them above John Williams.

I even have the expanded remastered “For your Eyes Only”

This song is even on it. It was written by Bill Conti’s wife Shelby, what a lucky guy!

Why settle for the action figure when you can have a commercial of the real thing. For cough medicine.
