After enduring the coldest winter for 30 years, you might have been hoping for some respite from the cold weather.
However, scientists are now warning that Britain can expect to endure a series of extreme winters - the like of which have not seen for more than 300 years.
Researchers have found that low solar activity - marked by a decrease in the sun's magnetic field - influences the weather conditions across northern Europe.
The last time the sun showed similar behaviour, between 1650 and 1700, temperatures dropped so low that Londoners were able to skate and hold fairs on the iced-over River Thames.
According to a study published today, we are moving into "an era of low solar activity which is likely to result in UK winter temperatures more like those at the end of the Seventeenth Century."
According to Mike Lockwood, one of the main researchers, the latest winter marks the start of a Maunder minimum - when solar activity falls for a prolonged time.
The sun's magnetic field is thought to influence the jet stream - a fast-moving, high altitude current of air which moves eastwards at 35,000ft over the Atlantic.
During the famously cold winters of the late 1600s the mild westerly winds were blocked and replaced by much colder blasts from the north-east - bringing Arctic conditions with them.
The link between weaker solar activity and cold winters was made after experts found similarities between early weather records and this year's data.

A few days ago I read that NOAA has determined that this was the hottest March since the Big Bang. I guess it all depends on how you look at it and what your definition of hot and cold is.

Now, great to my surprise, we were all wrong for 70 years. Even I, little ole me, was able to predict a cool winter this year as Drudge declared almost no sun spot activity last year. This is such a scam, the carbon pushers should be prosecuted under RICO for this scam.
And yet, I bet we get a carbon tax just because we got health care pushed through even though it was 2 to 1 against it. The morons can't be embarrassed enough to drop it. Let me be the first to reveal the reason it will be cooler this coming year,......The Iceland volcano blotted out the sun for a spell, so we still need to pursue the carbon tax because we can't count on volcano's to erupt every year. Gore takes cash for water campaign from chemical firm
Snip: Al Gore, the self-styled squeakiest-clean and deepest-green politician in American history, has some explaining to do this weekend. His environmental organisation has taken money to raise awareness about the need for clean water from a controversial chemicals company involved in the aftermath of one of the world's worst pollution disasters.
Dow Chemical, the US firm which now owns the leaking pesticides factory responsible for thousands of deaths in Bhopal, India, is sponsoring Life Earth events in 150 cities today. The event aims to raise money for clean water programmes. Research by environmental organisations has found dangerous levels of highly toxic chemicals in rivers, lakes and other water supplies close to several other factories owned by Dow and its subsidiaries in countries including the United States, Brazil and South Africa.

The upcoming colder windows are being caused by Global Warming!
I'd put a sarcasm tag on it, but I expect that will be exactly the rationale in the next year or two.
What you don’t realize is that all the cold weather everywhere is caused by global warming. Ultimately everything bad is caused by global warming. If you have dandruff, if your radiator leaks, if the IRS decides to audit you, it’s caused by global warming.
