DARLINGTON, S.C. Jamie McMurray set a track record at Darlington Raceway to lead qualifying for the Southern 500 on Friday.
McMurray made it around the 1.366-mile egg-shaped superspeedway at 180.370 mph to surpass Matt Kenseth's record run from a year ago.

Denny Hamlin is on the pole at Darlington, but he’ll have to watch out for JGR teammate and fellow front-row starter Kyle Busch. Green flag set for 7:45 p.m. ET.
KyBu was wicked fast, but not as fast as the wall.
I just wish they would string up some lights here at MIS. The August race is pure torture to watch while sitting in the August sun.
I want a Darlington stripe.. I don’t know if I could pass a physical tho.. or fit in a car. ;-)
complain is about all I can tell ya. I’m surprised they don’t have them..
I’ll tell you one thing. There is no more awesome a place in the world to stand than up near the fence at the entrance to turn one at Michigan.
I do believe that is the fastest spot in all of NASCAR. I’ve seen those guys peg 210mph right up against the wall just before they dive down into the turn. You really do have to hold on to your hat.
Good point.
Not only would it be easier on fans but it probably would bring in more revenue putting the race on in prime time.
The real problem is the fact that its right on the edge of town and would be restricted to ending no later than midnight or something.
I live several miles away and can here the cars on the track. When you’re right there in Brooklyn its like they’re racing in the street or something.
I’ve been to many races at Ascott in south Calif along with the Ontario Motor speedway Moroso Daytona and Sebring.
Can’t believe the noise when ya get there late and are a mile away.
NASCAR & Dragsters are the worst.
