He's made his name as an overweight, larger-than-life character throughout his Hollywood career.

But the pounds have been falling off portly actor John Goodman as he showed off a slimmer physique at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles last night.

The 57-year-old, who was rumoured to weigh 28 stone 18months ago, looked almost half the man he was just under a year ago as he attended the AFI Life Achievement Award party.

I have given up wishing my husband will loose weight and learn vegetables are not the enemy. After several stents and a heart attack he still eats the same way. I have to take care of myself and whatever happens, happens.

I might have mentioned this before. My daughter had names for both of her grandmothers. My wife's mother was fat, so my little darling, not being long on tact, called her Fat Granny. My mother raised Nubians for the milk and my daughter loved to visit and play with the goats(nubians being very gentle, at least the nanny goats were)and so she called my mother Goat Granny. Every time I see your FReeper handle I remember my mother:)

Sorry to read you lost him 20 years ago.

Some really funny scenes from "Always". Goodman is in a lot of them.

"John Candy"

Candy's best work was undoubtedly his stint at SCTV which might be the funniest tv comedy ever. Candy should be judged by that work instead of his lame film roles. With SCTV, Candy's output was some of the most hilarious bits ever to appear on tv.

Uncle Buck was a cute movie. Some of his other film stuff was okay but his SCTV stuff was a riot.

The hapless, phony, fawning William B. William (Ed McMahon) character who is contantly humiliated as the sidekick.

Johnny LaRue the abusive restaurant critic. Yorgy the Kazak who drinks from car batteries for booze and other weird characters. So funny. SCTV was great because they did not have the ego of Sat Night Live.

He also seemed like a decent guy.

John Candy’s other problem was his smoking. I think he was a big smoker. Weight and smoking are a bad combination. Smoking is a bad combination with anything.

Funny guy who appeared to be pretty down to earth and decent. I found something on youtube where he was interviewed I think w/ creepy Letterman. Candy had just bought a house in the country n. of Toronto. He was talking about problems he had to fix. I think he water running under the house like a river or something. It was very funny and geniune.

Goodman donated his extra weight to the ballooning-again Mike Huckabee.

Catherine O’Hara and Joe Flaherty are other SCTV alumni whose post-tv work was never near as good their work with SCTV. Just thinking about the Big Jim McBob and Billy Sol Hurok saying “she blowed up real good” makes me convulse.

Catherine O'Hara I thought was very funny on the show and I do not find most (really all) women comedians (sp) funny. She was great. Joe anchored the show but sadly success after that was tough.

LOL! “blowed up real good.” It was such a great show. It took a little while to get it or get into it but it was great.
