How do you domesticate a wild animal? Has anyone tried it today?

My dog is part dingo and my cat is part desert lynx... I can tell.. each is edgy in his own way. But each is also pretty passive and trainable. The dog is very bright. The cat is remarkable stupid.

I believe people in modern times have tried and failed with the zebra and elephant (which can be tamed but not yet domesticated). I guess you would have to live with them from birth and be willing to eat almost all of them and keep only the docile ones alive.
