Just to let everyone whose mail and packages are being processed by the East Texas Processing & Distribution Center in Tyler, Texas---your First-Class packages are being processed together with Priority packages, which means you are spending money for Priority service when you could just pay First Class fees and get the package delivered in the same amount of time. It's not right to lie, and so I'm letting everyone served by this processing center know they could be paying less for shipping. Could I get into trouble for telling about it? Yes--they don't want word to get out. But I'm doing it so Lord protect my job.

Basically first class and priority are the same class of service.

First class however, is not distance sensitive, one stamp is good to send your mail next door, or from Florida to Alaska. The example pricing sheet goes up to 13 ounces.

Priority mail is zoned, the further away... the more you pay. The example pricing starts at one pound, and one pound is the minimum for “Priority”.

Yes, many times they are, but not 100% as they get further down the line. If short handed, priority goes and first class waits. doesn’t happen much at my level but you have to wonder with all the cutting of clerk hours in our area how much it happens in the distribution centers.

Am I missing something? Do other offices have separate processing divisions? Do other towns have First-Class and Priority offices?

When I visit my post office there is only one counter and they "process" ALL packages at that counter.

If there is something going on behind the walls could you explain it better. Your post is rather vague as to how the "processing" should be different.

Nobody can possibly be this stupid or ignorant.

“Priority” mail, unlike it’s predecessor “parcel post” (on which Priority pricing was originally based) has an approximate delivery time of two days. That was and is an effort by the USPS to compete with UPS and FedEx expedited delivery.

There’s no guarantee of two days and they say that explicitly. First class can routinely take a week. The USPS makes no guarantee at all on first class.

If first class items happen to go onto the same flight or truck as Priority because there’s room to do it, that’s a good thing.

Get it? A good thing. Someone is getting expedited performance they didn’t expect.

And, no, you can’t ship first class and expect Priority delivery because some moron on an internet chat board said so.

As for the post office in general, and union hacks like you, we need to get rid of it and you entirely, it should all be done privately. It can’t happen soon enough. “Priority” notwithstanding.

Ah, no, they're not. Not even close.

Leave it to the ignorant to single themselves out. You did good.

Any package over 13 ounces has to be shipped Priority,Parcel Post or Media Mail. (books,film,music,etc...) Anything that weighs 4-5 pounds I would use a Flat Rate Priority Box.

Really? Too much coffee today? If you are going to say they are not, not even close, perhaps instead of questioning my ignorance level, you could have accurately pointed our my error?

Where am I wrong? What I see is:

First class is in the grid as 1-3 days.
Priority mail is 1-3 days “on average”

Neither is guaranteed. You have to move up to “express mail” for the guarantee.

As I mentioned First Class is available for 13oz or less, while Priority is for 70 pounds or less.

My post office denies first class service up to a certain weight. Has to go priority if it is a package and not an envelope (and no I am not talking about using their priority boxes they provide).

I remember a couple of decades ago (late 80s or early 90s) the Post Office’s slogan was “Priority Mail 2 pounds, 2 oz, 2 days GUARANTEED”).

Where are you wrong? You believe the USPS.

I ship about 4,000 packages all over the country every year, split about evenly between Priority and 1st Class, all with Delivery Confirmation so I know exactly when they arrive.

Actual average Priority delivery time is about 2 days, rarely does a package take 3 days.

Almost never does a 1st Class item get delivered in 2 days, the average is about 4 days, a week isn’t at all uncommon.

That’s reality over a large sample size and has been for years, regardless of any BS boilerplate on the USPS site.

Priority is dependably fast. 2 days coast to coast. Mail it Saturday and it’s there Monday. But it’s expensive for over one pound. I’m always amused at how I can ship a two pound package to anywhere in Canada for less than it costs to send that same package from San Francisco to Phoenix. That’s because the weight limit for international First Class is 4 lb., as opposed to 13 oz for domestic.
