The wheels on the school bus go 'round and 'round, but eventually students are supposed to get off.
Not so for one South Florida boy, who was trapped on his school bus the entire day after the bus driver forgot to check and see if all of the students got off for school. Dylan Gottshall was found Monday on his school bus around 1 p.m., hours after he was supposed to get off and go to class at Parkway Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, TCPalm.com reports. The 7-year-old first grader was picked up at his bus stop around 7:30 a.m., but fell asleep on the bus by the time it arrived at school. He didn't wake up as all the other kids got off the bus and so the bus driver drove the bus back to the bus depot.
And so Dylan was trapped on the bus for hours with no way to get off, his father said.
"I was in shock and I was very angry that my child was left on a bus," Sam Gottshall said. "We all know what happens to kids who get locked in vehicles on hot days and everything and I was thankful it wasn't a hot day." School district officials said they were checking into the incident to see how a student could be stuck on a bus the entire day without anyone noticing.
So what do you do on a school bus all day? Dylan decided he'd get a math lesson in.
He counted all the open windows and all the closed windows. And then he counted them again, his father said. "He was very scared an
Good thing this was in Florida, and not Minnesota
Does Nancy Grace know about this? :)
seven year old first grader?
The kid couldn’t figure out the emergency exit? I’m assuming this is not a ‘special needs’ kid here so what’s wrong with a kid who can’t figure out who to use an emergency exit?
Perhaps an earlier bedtime is in order. At least he caught up on his sleep.
Too bad none of the windows he counted were open.
Love that headline, nickcarraway, because the two points are made twice in the same sentence of the heading I love so much, nickcarraway.
Poor little guy. They are just kids and sometimes just do not know what to do. My grandson went a week in K without lunch because the teacher never told the kids how to order from the lunch menu. I almost ripped the teacher a new one. Her response, hey they are five they should have figured it out. (Oh, first week of school, really how are K supposed to know).
Maybe this little guy on the bus hadn’t ridden very much.
Yep, depends on when the cut off Bday is for K.
Dylan’s not real bright for a seven year old. “Counted all the open windows,” and he still couldn’t find a way out of the bus? Not to mention every school bus I know of has an emergency exit door in the back that opens really easily.
That’s old. I turned seven when I went into the third grade.
Good thing this was in Florida, and not Minnesota
As far as Florida is concerned... Good thing this is January, and not August.
“Counted all the open windows, and he still couldnt find a way out of the bus?”
It’s about a 15 foot drop from the top window of a school bus to the ground.
The emergency exit probably could not be opened by a 7 year old.
>>>seven year old first grader?<<<
Not unusual at all. Pretty much any child with a birthday before the last day of school is going to be 7 for at least part of 1st grade. This boy probably just celebrated a birthday.
He may not be able to read; in addition, many children these days have had so much done FOR them that they don’t always have the initiative to figure things out.
What I find surprising is that not a single student on the bus told the bus driver “There’s a kid asleep on the seat”.
Exactly. It’s a good thing that the kid DIDN’T try to climb out a window. Imagine what would have happened if the kid landed on his head and wasn’t found for hours later.
