Exactly right...The light domes from these cities are totally destroying the night sky's of even very rural regions of the U.S.

It does not have to be this way, with simple well designed lighting fixtures.

Anyway, I had no idea those of use that want dark sky's are all Communist and Socialist....

No, they aren’t all Communists...some are merely naive “useful idiots” who mistakenly aid Red agitprop by believing the spin.

...but passing laws to limit how many lights you can turn on is decidely Communistic, no matter how nicely the language is couched as “dark skies.”

We probably use the word Communist differently.

It might be something Communists do. It might be something any big government might do. I don’t think it’s specifically Communist. If you can find a Communist organization saying that dark skies is a goal of theirs.

I like the idea that its the old school street lighting companies that are behind the dark skies communist scare.

Up in parts of Maine and NH there are so many stars visible that one can barely find the dipper or Caseophia (sp).

You should use that “scope” to look up your rectum to see if you have any brains.

It isn’t “common-sense” lighting fixtures that is being debated here - it is the radical “no lights at all” attempts... and many of the “dark sky-friendly” lighting is worthless for its fundamental purpose - to light a given space.

And regardless of what anyone feels here (even if overly influenced by personal hobbies), this is, in fact, powered by the same types/groups as all the rest of the radical environmental movement (Gia -worshipping socialists).

I enjoy a dark night where stars and other celestial bodies are visible as much as anyone - but where does one draw the line? I have heard so many say that one person’s rights end where another’s begin - but how does that align with lighting? If I live where the neighbor wants a floodlight to illuminate their back yard - that light, by design, WILL somewhat light up mine - even if I would prefer it not to be (or don’t want the light coming in my window). I can get window shades and heavy curtains to help with the latter - but still -— my neighbor has a right to light his yard as well.

But lets not overlook some other issues with this whole lighting issue - the same enviro-nuts who want to reduce our “carbon footprint” push for lighting that is a lot less efficient - and will take more of - to illuminate a given space.

For many areas - good lighting is a primary and effective means of security. Discounting that, as some here have (calling in INsecurity) is immature and completely missing the point.

There has to be some middle ground - Just like the environment - we shouldn’t go out of our way to abuse it - but we shouldn’t sacrifice mankind or our safety either.

But if me having a big light prevents someone from breaking in and stealing my stuff, but at the same time - causes trouble with my neighbor who is a stargazer... I’ll still pick protecting my stuff.

Mirror lock is sometimes burried in the menus. It is on my Canon 20D. But most high end and prosumer models have it.

You clearly have never seen Los Angeles on approach from 8,000 feet....

Cockpit view of a twilight landing at LAX. [cool video, don't care much more the music]

Setting that aside, I spent a few years living on S. Michigan Ave. in downtown Chicago, during the period when its streetlights* were being replaced.

The end result was that I could now read the newspaper in my bedroom at night without turning on the lights. And I lived on the 15th floor. It was silly, it was stupid, it was technologically-doable (with foresight). Making the observation does not make me a Gramscian.

At sea nearly half-a-hundred years ago, under darken ship conditions, nearly as good as a mountaintop without lights. The Milky Way stood out brilliantly from the background.

I think ALL of North Korea qualifies...

There is a picture that NASA put together some time back of the entire earth at night. (I'd link the picture in here, but the picture is bloody huge.) You can tell at a glance where civilization exists. The U.S., Europe, Japan, and to a lesser degree, India and China are all perfectly visible. Africa,  South America and Asia have isolated spots of light surrounded by utter darkness. Even Australia is mostly dark, with highlights of the major cities. You can definitely pick out Sidney!

I used to go up into the mountains via Ward on occasion when I lived out in Boulder years ago. Probably drove right past your house a few times I’m sure. It was beautiful out there. Wish now I’d been aware enough to think of going out there at night and looking at the stars.

Your not paying attention...There has been no middle ground...Did you notice the light domes from the cities now extends for hundreds of miles into the atmosphere and in all directions, completely washing out night sky's, even into many rural areas? And it's just getting worse.

Look, if people want to turn night into day, and plant street lights every 80 feet, and pay the taxes on them, I can't do anything about it.

The pier and mounting plates are junk yard specials. The pier is sunk into about 2k lbs of concrete. BTW, it's an old 10.
