Canada investigates mass sled dog slaughter

Police are investigating the slaughter of 100 husky dogs used during the 2010 Winter Olympics to pull tourist sleds in the Canadian ski resort of Whistler, authorities said Monday.

The grisly killings were reportedly carried out by one worker over two days in April 2010 with a shotgun and a knife, with reports of injured dogs crawling out of a mass grave.

Local media said the dogs were killed because business slumped in the two months following the Games and they were no longer needed by tourism companies Outdoor Adventures and Howling Dogs, which sell dog-sled rides to tourists.

Good Heavens! Surely the owners could have found a better way to take care of the dogs?

Here’s hoping the sick monster that carried this out is met upon his death at the Pearly Gates by St. Francis of Assissi(sp)saying ‘I don’t think so’.

Give him a little jail time then reinstate him in the Olympics. Everybody deserves a second chance. Right Mr. President?

The Humane Society does this every single day. The one difference is they have access to better tools for the slaughter.

Yep...being cruel is the key. Humanely put them down if absolutely necessary. Reminds me of the greyhound business....another bunch of sick individuals going to straight to hell.

PETA and the HS are not as easy to deal with as one would believe, especially with a hundred animals involved. There would be significant cost involved in transport and disposal.

That being said however... Every swinging dick involved in this incident should have their a$$ prosecuted to the fullest extent of what ever laws are available.

Likely the laws are lacking in this regard, but an ambitious prosecutor can investigate the crap out of all aspects of all involved parties long enough to cost them vastly more than the proper handling procedures ever would have.

Of all the dogs in the world these Huskys are my favorite. I've had 2 Siberians and adored them. I would have gladly taken as many as I thought I could care for rather than this. A free internet ad would have had volunteers taking these dogs and paying the airfare or transport fees just to save their lives. There just is no excuse.

Done properly the knife is humane if messy. Doesn’t sound like these guys gave a thought to humane. A simple .22 would have been much better if they lacked the drugs.

From what I’ve read sled dogs do not make good pets. Still a cryin shame to destroy so many beautiful animals. I’m sure lack of money to feed them had something to do with the decision.

Greyhound business takes it to a whole new level. There the dogs live in misery but will eventually be put down humanely.

Right PETA and HS kill animals for economic reasons, just as this company did.

PETA doesn’t always dispose of animals properly. The case where they killed over 200 dogs and dumped the bodies in a garbage dumpster.

I well understand how PETA and the HS operate, my mother has run a cat shelter for decades. We have two farms in the family.

There is no way on earth that euthanizing a dog with a knife can be reasonably justified as economically expedient.

Unless you don’t have access to the killing tools which shelters possess.

Killing anything with a blade is not “humane”. I know this to be fact.

My grandfather, who killed more animals than I can count, never killed anything bigger than a chicken with a blade.

He even shot the frikin minks he raised.

I object to the idea that only PETA and the HS can humanely put animals down.

Granted the way these guys did it is a horrible mess. Any farmer has most likely put down animals and done it in a humane manner.
