FOX Sports ExclusiveNFL, players agree to 7-day extension
FOX SPORTS ^ | March 4, 2011 | ALEX MARVEZ

The NFL owners and the NFL Players Association agreed Friday to extend the current collective bargaining agreement by one week to allow negotiations to continue, the NFL Network reported.

The labor deal was set to expire at 11:59 pm ET Friday after the sides agreed Thursday on a 24-hour extension. Since the sides are believed to still be far apart on the key issues, most expected that Friday's brief session in Washington, D.C., would be used to come to terms on a longer extension.

The new deadline for the expiration of the CBA is March 11 at 11:59pm ET, as the league hopes to avoid its first work stoppage since 1987. During the next week, teams won't be allowed to talk to free agents or make player transactions, but they will be able to talk with agents of their own players.

The two sides, led by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, will return Monday morning for more talks before federal mediator George Cohen.

Goodell said Friday the two sides have been hard at work in the mediation sessions, but refused to divulge any details of what has been discussed.

I don’t get it. Why don’t the owners get together and simply say: The most ANY player will get is $100,000. And please don’t trot out the anti-trust argument. The Maritime Association did the same thing decades ago to the Stevedores unions. Instead of the NFL Players negotiating with team owners, it negotiates with the owners’ association. Given that many NFL players have no job alternatives that pay nearly as much, perhaps owners could lower ticket prices to where a retiree could afford to go to a game once in a while.

NFL PAC Donated Large Sums to Harry Reid and Other Democrats

CNSNews.com – The National Football League’s political action committee—Gridiron PAC—has weighed in on the hotly contested U.S. Senate election in Nevada that pits conservative Republican challenger Sharron Angle against Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid.

The PAC has given $10,000 to Reid—the maximum it can give in a single election cycle—and no money to Angle, according to Federal Election Commission data compiled by OpenSecrets.org.

The NFL’s PAC also contributed to other incumbent Democratic senators facing viable challengers this year, giving $5,000 to Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas; $5,000 to Russ Feingold of Wisconsin; $5,000 to Barbara Boxer of California; $5,000 to Michael Bennet of Colorado; and $5,000 to Patty Murray of Washington.

In none of these races did the NFL’s PAC contribute to the Republican challenger.

Eff the NFL, the owners and the players. They love Obama and they smeared Rush Limbaugh as a rascist and blocked his attempt to buy into the St. Louis Rams which was bought by a shady muslim.

Strike, lockout - WHO CARES! I stopped watching the overpaid NFL and baseball players games a long time ago. Add in the NBA, and you’ve got a lot of whiney pampered thugs. Yeah, there are a few good eggs mixed in there, too - I found other things to do with my time.

Thanks for the link. Troubling for sure. I’d be interested on Rush’s take concerning this. I’d bet he’d say he’s going to continue to enjoy the games.

I think when the judge stopped the Owners from tapping into the TV revenue money, they became much more willing to negotiate.

“I think when the judge stopped the Owners from tapping into the TV revenue money, they became much more willing to negotiate.”

I agree. Listening to NFL Network, they’re saying the mediator wouldn’t have arranged this extension unless there was a real possibility of getting a deal done by next week’s deadline.

Listened to Limbaugh today. His take is that there will be a settlement and a season. The reason is because the economy is tough, football is more popular than ever before, the time is always running out for players, and there’s no way they’re going to kill the golden goose right now.

Everyone knows what happened to pro-baseball when they went on strike. Many fans never came back.

The only way they could recover was turning a blind eye to the BALCO boys running up longball numbers until the performances were too over the top to ignore.

I think the owners are being forced into a settlement because with that court ruling that the US$4 billion in TV rights fees cannot be kept exclusively by the owners, there goes the incentive for the owners to do a full season (or longer!) holdout.

Don't be surprised that we will see a new deal announced within a week.
