**VANITY** PLEASE RECOMMEND FUN .223 RIFLE **VANITY**

I've been intrigued by the Appleseed Project and I would like to take part in some of their shooting events, as well as other recreational shooting events. Most events require 400-500 rounds for weekend participation. The ammo for my current rifles would cost nearly a dollar per round. I've done some checking at Cheaper than Dirt and ammo for .223 rifles would be only $250 or so, a much more manageable cost.

I would like to get FReeper recommendations for fun-to-shoot rifles in the .223/5.56 that would be suitable for the Appleseed Project and practical for training purposes.

Also, does anyone know of a carbine conversion kit for a S&W Model 622 pistol, .22LR? Something similar to this Beretta?

Atlantic is a good dealer.

The 74 is pretty accurate despite the AK design.
The receiver doesn’t flex a lot with that round.

I love the AR15, and I think that is the best deal on the market for a .223 at the moment, but I enjoy lots of other platforms that perform very well.

I’ve had two of the early Mini14s, both shot 4” to 5” groups at 100 yard and opened up more after they got hot. I understand Ruger has done some redesign on the new ones and they are much better.

My problem with them is you can get an AR15 for the same price or cheaper and they have reliable mags everywhere cheap. I always had problems with the aftermarket Mini14 mags and, back when, the factory mags were hard to get and expensive.

I do appreciate the advanced info on Appleseed. I have some friends who help run the program and I’m looking forward to getting out there with them.

Well, it’s not super-duper accurate, it’s not a sniper gun.
But for the kinds of things you might use it for, trekkin through the woods goin after small-medium size game at 40-50 yds, it’s fine. Woodchucks, that sort of thing.

I have much bigger guns but don’t want to think about how my shoulders would feel if I lugged them around for 8 hours or so...

;-)

When I got heavily back into firearms I went into foreign rifles. Believe it or not I don’t have an AR at all. I think I would like the new gas operated ones more than the older models. I never liked the “sprong!” when I fired them.

Still they are a great value in rifles...

They are an extremely accurate platform.

Get one now, while they are relatively cheap.

That Quigley Buffalo gun 45/70 comes to mind.

It’s about the same as my Mosin-Nagant though.

I like a piece that talks back a bit.

Thanks, Joe. Yes, I would go with blue or matte finishes.

If the purpose for the gun includes tournament shooting, then Ruger has Mini-14s specifically for that purpose. They come with heavier barrels, dampers, etc., and the price reflects that. The standard minis are indeed fun to shoot when throwing a lot of lead downrange, but the target and match versions are what you will need for tournament level shooting.

I completely agree with your opinion on the mini. It matches my experience as well.
