Many had previously believed it, and other treasures, was on the liner Wilhelm Gustloff when it was sunk in 1945.

I have Webroot, and it too protested. I visit the Daily Mail site more often than I’d like to admit, but haven’t had this warning pop up before. I let Webroot block whatever the thing was.

Wouldn't that be something if they did find it? I think the Russians reconstructed it.

Touring the Hermitage museum years ago was one of the highlights of my life.

Thanks Sunken Civ for the Ping

Tsarist Russia and the Romanovs have fascinated me since childhood.
I have every book on Anastasia, Catherine the Great, all the architecture and Palaces.
I had the great privilege of visiting Saint Petersburg in the early 90’s, and visited the Catherine Palace at Tsarskeloe Selo. So much had been destroyed by the Nazis in WWII , and the place where the fabled Amber Room stood was bare. A small collection of Amber objects rescued by the staff and buried in the gardens during the war were displayed. The original
room had been filled with such objects, all now lost.
I am hopeful that this great treasure will be found. These things usually do surface if they have not been broken up. I look forward to the day when people can visit Petersburg and see it in it’s rightful place.

Me too! It was amazing to see so many magnificent masterpieces in one place.

Were you in Petersburg post-Soviet?
Check out my post on visiting the Catherine Palace where the Amber Room originally stood.

No, actually it was the Soviet Union when I was there. :o) Ancient times, huh? One thing I remember very well were these amazing mosaics. From a short distance they appeared to be paintings. As much as I love the Louvre, the Hermitage is my all-time favorite museum.

Uh, no, it would make it the Prussian Amber Room.

And half of this thread is filled with people unnecessarily telling us what anti-virus programs they are running. No one cares. Stop it.

The Russians did build a replica and it's pretty darn impressive.

It would really be something if the original were found.

The Germans took the Amber Room to Konigsberg. The Russians took Konigsberg to Russia.

I guess that makes it even.
