Zots ready for the world

Brothers Jonathan and Jude Morales — remember those names. They are the Zots, and they aim to be the biggest rock stars to ever come out of San Antonio.

Oh, yeah. There's one other thing. They haven't hit their teenage years yet.

The Zots — they take their name from those fizzy sour candies — are among the live-music attractions at Fiesta Especial at Morgan's Wonderland on Friday. Fiesta Especial runs from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. The Zots perform at 3:30 p.m. (following Gasoline Alley).

River City Christian School organizes the annual alcohol- and tobacco-free Fiesta event that offers carnival rides, street performers, face painting, dance and music. Admission costs $15; free for special-needs children ($10 for those accompanying special needs guests).

The Zots will also play on the San Antonio Children's Museum float during the Texas Cavaliers' River Parade on Monday night.

It's tempting to think of the photogenic brothers as San Antonio's Jonas Brothers. There's certainly Disney appeal, but Jonathan, 12, and Jude, 10, fancy themselves Green Day, the Ramones, Jet and AC/DC rolled into one.

Their teaser demos “You Don't Know What You Got” and “Turn It Up,” produced by the Grammy-winning team of Michael Morales (their father) and Ron Morales (their uncle) at Studio M, have created serious buzz.

They have a Los Angeles-based management team (a Disney producer and former ASCAP executive) and New York attorneys who represent Madonna and Bruce Springsteen.

Not too shabby for cute kids at Eisenhower Middle School and Castle Hills Elementary. Even so, the Zots' dad knows that a music career is a longshot. He showed them a few chords and now the youngsters are ready to take over the world with their own songs.

“We spend a considerable amount of our focus just working on new songs, performances and learning how to be better at writing and producing and performing,” said Michael Morales, an '80s rock star in his own right with Top 20 hits “Who Do You Give Your Love To” and a remake of the Romantics' “What I Like About You.”

Morales emphasizes that the Zots “are a rock band that just happen to be young.”

“They weren't created by any network or young persons channel that got turned into a musical act,” he said.

“They just are who they are. The Zots aren't squeaky clean. Sometimes, they're a little bit menacing. They like onstage antics. They're kind of little wiseacres. Their mom (Barbra) doesn't like that misbehavin' very much. She blames me for it.

“They're just normal kids. But the Zots aren't like anything I've seen on any of the other channels. They're like a kid version of the Ramones.”

Zot it. I've had enough.

Although the "Cactus Cuties" were OK as a one-view novelty.
