REXBURG - What began as a complaint of domestic battery turned into an all-nighter for the Rexburg Police Department, with some of West First North being closed off Friday night and early Saturday morning.

According to police, the department was alerted by a 21-year-old woman, who said her husband, Kristopher Corey Butcher, 25, had become upset when their 3-month-old baby began crying.

"When she went into the baby's room the husband secured the door so she could not leave the room with the baby. (The) victim escaped by climbing out the window and entered back through another bedroom window in an attempt to get the baby," the police report stated. "The husband would not let her take the baby. The victim stated the husband forced her to leave the apartment and told her if she contacted law enforcement or brought them back to the apartment he would kill them."

The wife said Butcher had several guns in the house.

Police responded at 8:15 p.m. Friday.

After several attempts were made to contact Butcher, but police said he did not respond to phone calls.

The Rexburg Police Department Emergency Response Team secured the area around the apartments at 368 W. First North.

At 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the response team entered the Butcher apartment, took the suspect into custody and gave the baby to its mother.

Police found weapons in the apartment.

Butcher was charged with false imprisonment, domestic battery and injury to child, all misdemeanors, and was booked into the Madison County Jail.

More information will be available Monday.
