Terry Pratchett’s life belongs to him and his God. His life doesn’t belong to the state, the church or busybodies on FR.
100% agreement. Suicide isn't a choice I can imagine making, but I'm not willing to impose that on another person.
Yeah, but we can still mourn his contemplated passing and his chosen method.
The most sensible post in this entire thread.
Well said, having watched my grandfather die from both Parkinsons and Alzheimers at the same time I won’t judge anyone who chooses to avoid a fate like that.
I’m guessing Fiddler’s Green isn’t a popular poem for most here either...
Can he sell his organs? Then his body isn’t really his as determined by The State.
I can agree with that. However, I'll always be a staunch opponent of sanctioned suicide. Human nature is inescapable, and if suicide is ever truly legal, then there will be instances where the dying or the terribly disabled will be encouraged by someone to end it for a variety of reasons. That simply cannot be allowed to happen.
A careful reading will show that this article isn't about anyone committing suicide, but rather plans for a premeditated murder. Regardless of Mr. Pratchett's current intent or oxymoronic phrases like "assisted suicide", any rationality the atheistic libertarian argument may have ends with the involvement of other people. The state, the church, and society have always had a legitimate interest in preventing and punishing murder.
