People, please realize, especially after Father's Day yesterday, that a father is a man who raises a child. He fathers! Borrowing genetics from a 3rd party does Not Make that 3rd party a parent.

If a couple can't have the child they long for more than anything in the world, they can fight infertility by adoption or gamete donation. Neither is a moral failing. These options are ways to love and raise children. Genetics do not matter in love or childrearing.

Other than foster-to-adopt, adoption costs a lot of money and it's hard to get an infant (thus without serious emotional problems that may be lifelong). Using donor sperm if the father is infertile, or eggs if the mother is, would cost less, and would mean you could control the important prenatal care and early attachment and love of the baby.

The media and unthinking people love to CROW about how wrong these solutions are, how untasteful and immoral. They are wrong. The donor only provided some genetics. The donor is not a "dad" and never will be. He is only the source of some genetic traits. In the end, the genetic traits are just cocktail party conversation. What a parent Does with his child is parenting.

****The donor only provided some genetics. The donor is not a “dad” and never will be.****

However, the point of the article and the discussion - is the anonymity of the paid sperm donors - until the IVF children begin to have genetic medical problems or marry a half-sibling.

***Real life, however, isn’t a portrait.***

Each of us has traits that determine the journey and final destination of the life we are blessed to live.

Would it were possible that only men & women of good character and gentle souls meet, marry and raise children - while those people with inferior traits be infertile?

God would have made it thus - but he gave us faith, judgement, humility, trust and optimism. Some of us fail miserably, some succeed against all odds and some of us are just damn lucky.

I feel lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a problem with the anonymity of donors. I think that if the donors signed up for anonymity then it should stay that way forever. I think that donors and recipient couples should respect each other’s original contracts. If they wish a “contact in the future” relationship, great. If the donors wish to remain anonymous, then that is fine too. However, I guess what we are seeing is that both parties are changing their minds years later.

I think that children conceived in third party donor situations, like adopted children, have legitimate questions and curiosity and future contact for them with the donor is fine. They will see for themselves that donors are genetic donors, nothing but parlor tricks, and their parents are the ones who raised them, all the sleepless nights, the lessons, the love, the sweat, the tears.

Science and opportunists have taken over another of God’s (or nature’s) functions and turned the gift of life into a fashion accessory for those who can afford to pay.

Human donor sperm and eggs are now harvested and traded as commodities. The demand for human children is being accelerated by single mothers, gay parents and aging, infertile couples. There’s something selfish and unnatural in those categories.

Sorry if my opinion offends - but nothing good happens when we play God - just because we don’t like His rules.

not spilled, bottled for later use.

the children are the product.

if anything this is the wet dream of feminists, fatherless offspring.

Time to re-educate our sons on the sanctity of their sperm. It’s not chopped liver!!!!!!!!!

Seems like the natural rhythms of life have been interrupted. In the past; wars, natural disasters and plague have propelled increases in human reproduction.

I suppose we could view the new forms of procreation as a counter to the mass abortions of the last decades.
