DAYTON — An ice cream truck driver was shot and killed just moments after he sold ice cream to children in the 4600 block of Midway Avenue Tuesday evening.
Carl Banks, 60, of Dayton, was identified as the driver by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office late Tuesday night.
Police originally thought it was an accident when someone called 911 to report the ice cream truck struck a house in the 4400 block of Midway Avenue. When emergency crews arrived on scene, they found Banks shot to death at the wheel, Dayton Police Sgt. John Sullivan said. Witnesses told police they saw the children buy ice cream near the Whitmore Arms apartment complex around 6:15 p.m. and then heard shots fired in the area.
Homicide detectives are investigating the incident. Adro Dondadah, a resident in the area, said he is familiar with the ice cream truck driver because he had been selling soft serve and hot food from the truck in the area for years.
Banks' death is likely to anger a lot of people, Dondadah said. Other neighbors also expressed outrage at the shooting to police, asking, “Who does a thing like that?” “It would seem like an ice cream truck would be a safe haven,” Sullivan said.

Uh, take a look around you people. Your kids and neighbors do a thing like that when you don't take your parenting responsibilities seriously and don't teach your kids values.
Ahhhh ... Dayton, OH. Another of those liberal bastions of crime, low-income people, and unemployed union employees. At one time, Dayton was a shining example of the industrial midwest. Now it is a blight upon the landscape.
I spent 14 years in Dayton with NCR, and cannot believe how much it has changed since the mid 1990’s.
Need bullet proof Glass on Ice cream trucks in “Cultural areas” like in a check cashing store.
Why? It's an opportunity to steal money, isn't it, just like a liquor store.
Maybe the driver was selling drugs, or maybe he had a personal enemy for any of a dozen reasons. Maybe he looked at someone "wrong."
They need to secure the Police Precincts. I saw the same in the original version of “Assault Precinct 13”.
