Second story I've run across this week about a prequel to a classic sci-fi film. Apparently Hollywood has listened to the public's complaints about sequels.

Sigourney Weaver was an unknown when she came out as the lone human survivor. Casting a Hollywood big-shot in the leading role may just be a mistake. Theron did some decent work in movies like “Monster”, but just about everything else, including sci-fi, has SUCKED.

Brunettes rule the sci-fi roost.

“Ridley has been sort of very cryptically obtuse about everything,

There's a compliment in there somewhere.

So say we all!

Can’t say I’m really an expert on the “Alien” universe, but from what I understood from the last couple “Alien Vs. Predator” movie was that the “Aliens” were created and breed by the “Predators” as sort of an ultimate hunting challenge, but some escaped and started breeding out of control and exterminating any life on planets the ended up on. I’m not sure if they plan to keep this lore for the new movie, or if its a reboot that will restore “Aliens” to it’s roots and remove the “Predators” from the lore.

They could have far better success with this if they toned down the action and went back to the slower paced mood-suspense of the first movie. That is, less “Fast and Furious”, and more “Solaris”.

For instance, in the first movie, there is a sense of professionalism and business about the crew. They are basically a tugboat crew carrying a refinery and its ore. It is all on autopilot, and would have stayed that way, except for the ship getting an emergency signal. Nothing glamorous about it at all. The future is hard work.

Then, when they visit the crashed alien vessel, they get to see the first of H. R. Giger’s designs. His artistry is a major part of the movie, and totally captivated his audience.

Stuff like this is what truly distinguishes a movie. Like the set design for Gotham City in the original Batman, or the future Los Angeles in Blade Runner. It is interesting enough that on its own, you wouldn’t mind a travelogue just to see the sights.

Until the very moment when the nymph alien nails Caligula on the face, the movie is rather slow paced, and just sets the mood. And that is more than good, even without car crashes and fistfights.

If they could get that sort of thing in the prequel, it will be a hit.
