Every now and then a poster will put up a picture that purports to be of a jet fighter breaking the sound barrier. These pictures are of a cloud/ vapor front that forms around the aircraft under certain atmospheric conditions. Today while watching the Indycar race from Loudon N. H. I have seen this cloud/ vapor phenomenon appear off of the rear wing of the cars on the track. While these cars are fast, I don't think they are breaking the sound barrier.

Its the change in air pressure causing the moisture to condense I believe.

It was pretty humid today in Loudon. Intellicast had it listed at 76% at race time.

While these cars are fast, I don't think they are breaking the sound barrier. No, they aren't. And the vapor doesn't appear because the sound barrier is being broken, although that may cause it to precipitate (pun intended).
As the divergent pressures from the top of the wing and the bottom of the wing down, one of the side effects is to suddenly change the dew-point of the air where they intermix.
Remember.... p=vrnt.... Compressing air makes it hot, lowering the pressure cools it.
So you're looking at a micro-scale thunderstorm event where a dry-line high pressure area meets a cold front.
But I'm just a cook. ;) What do I know?

On the right day (temperature/humidity) you can come into the break at 400+ knots in an F/A-18 and make a nice cottonball over midfield (or at the numbers if you’re feeling frisky).

And most of those pictures put up have, indeed, been of a jet fighter breaking the sound barrier and not what you're referring to.
