Coroner Says Amy Winehouse Died From Alcohol Poisoning

A British coroner says singer Amy Winehouse died as the unintended consequence of drinking too much alcohol.

Coroner Suzanne Greenaway gave a verdict of death by misadventure, saying Winehouse died of accidental alcohol poisoning.

The singer, who fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead at her London home in July.

An autopsy was inconclusive, but found no trace of illegal drugs in her system.

Winehouse was reportedly more than five times over the legal drunk-driving limit, which is the same in the United Kingdom is as it is in the United States, when she died.

So she would’ve blown over a .400. Considering that she was a fairly small person and rail-thin anyway, yeah, I can see that being kind of, y’know, fatal.

"but found no trace of illegal drugs in her system."

No mention of prescription drugs, which are legal.

very sad. death, asylums, or prison.the sad fate of every alcoholic. her situation was just ver public.

i got sober at 21. people used to say i was too young, it didn't make sense. when you see what happened to Amy you can see it really doesn't matter how old one is when they quit drinking. what matters is if they are an alcoholic is if going tp make it to 25 or 30 or 40.

Glad you were able to overcome alcoholism. It runs in my family, my brother was in rehab and hasn’t had a drink for 5 years (he’s 54), but he had to hit rock bottom to stop. I’m glad he didn’t end up in death or in an asylum, but it was rehab or prison (for dui).

He now goes to prisons and AA meetings to speak and help others.

Alcoholism is horrible.

I said it on the original “Drunken Slut Died” thread a couple of months ago. Poor thing just had too much blood in her alcohol.

Her cremation required a special hazmat permit.

I really don't care about the particulars, but this is horrible reporting. The US does not have a national BAC standard. So they tell us a falsehood, when the actual information would have been completely fine. I suppose one could look up the UK BAC limit, but why bother?

Additionally, I continue to be annoyed by the reference to drunk-driving standards when driving is not the activity in which the person is engaging. I'm sure there are people who can load up above .20 and still be coherent, rational beings. They just shouldn't drive.

The US does not have a national BAC standard.

While that's technically true, the US does have a de facto standard of .08. Failure to comply costs a state its federal highway money.

On a tangent, note nobody is calling for government to ban alcohol.

If she would have died taking vitamins or herbals, the government would be shutting them down and taking them off the shelves in order to “keep people safe from themselves”.

It’s way easier to overdose on alcohol and kill yourself than vitamins and supplements.

Unless you’re a chronic alcoholic, .40 is going to be lethal for a majority of people.
