St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is calling it a career.
La Russa, only days removed from winning the World Series, made the announcement during a Monday morning news conference, the Cardinals' web site said.

If only Ron Washington had started Derek Holland in game 7, it might have been a different story.
But he has had a hell of a career and is leaving on top. He deserves to enjoy retirement.
Here you go, John. Right up your alley.
More likely Francona will get this job.
Thanks Tony.
I wouldn’t object to that. I would rather see Yadier Molina become the player/manager of the team though. That hasn’t happened in awhile and I think he has the head for it. Just thinking outside the box.
Three pennants and two championships since 2004.
Tony sure drove a lot of us Cardinal fans crazy with his constant moves, and unusual ideas (like batting the pitcher in the 8th spot). But the results are impossible to dispute. No other manager has had the same success in the last 16 years.
If Ron Washington had let Holland finish game six, there would hae been no game seven.
A little irony there with the Cards being the team that Francona's Sox beat in 2004 to end the curse.
You're gonna tee this one up for me, are you lad? Well thank you.
Good riddance to perhaps the biggest scoundrel ever to disgrace the managerial ranks of major league baseball. Hopefully his successor will fire that fraud Mark McGwire.
Time for Tony to get out on the golf course. Look for his upcoming golfing appearances at the Barry Bonds Open, The Roger Clemons Classic, and the Canseco Cup.
Best manager (as opposed to lineup filler-outer) that I’ve ever seen. And I’m not even a St. Louis fan.
Tony irritated fans because his style was intense rather than aggressive, and he relied on power rather than speed as had all other successful Card managers since 1926. Maybe the next guy will get games finished in less than four hours.
Oquendo is a good candidate, as is Francona, whose father played here.
Herzog, however, did as much with far less until the brewery sabotaged him.
I admire Tony La Russa greatly. What a career. Hope he has a wonderful retirement and just eases back and enjoys life. He deserves it.
I was in St. Louis when Whitey was managing. It was truly glorious.
Thank God and Greyhound he’s gone.
signed, disappointed and disgruntled Ranger fan. They shoulda had it.
Plus, I question the wisdom of walking Pujols to pitch to Berkman, considering Berkman was batting over 400 vs the Rangers in the series. Yes, I know that is conventional wisdom, but still, Berkman was killing them.
Excellent point. The hottest pitcher on the staff spends the last two games on the bench when his team is up 3-2 and only needs one. What kind of management is that?
