Legendary boxer Smokin’ Joe Frazier is in the final fight of his life.

Frazier, who gave the boxing world the “Thrilla in Manila,” and many other classic memories, is deathly ill with advanced liver cancer.

"He’s in serious shape, we’re looking for a miracle," a source close to the former heavyweight champ told The New York Post. "They’re only giving him a short time to live. We need to have as many people as possible praying for Joe right now."

God bless Joe Frazier. I fine man, a class act and my personal all-time favorite boxer. I pray that God is merciful to him and blesses him with good health and comfort. Also that God may bless his family with comfort and strength.

I have lost so many friends to cancer this past year.

Dave Wilkerson actually did a column on it this year. Am I just imagining it, or is cancer news just pouring out of the woodwork? How can there be a sudden epidemic of it?

Here is the Wilkerson article he did just before he was killed this year. I’ve passed it around before, but it seems to have blessed people.

I’m not sure there is an “epidemic”....but we ARE getting older.....and older you are, the more likely you will at some point face cancer...it’s life.

I think there is an epidemic of information. The numbers don't show a sudden increase in cancer.

The “epidemic” of cancer is due to people living longer, nothing more.

There are relatively few cancers that afflict young people.

100 years ago the average life expectancy was about 45. Few people lived long enough to develop cancer.

That being said, prayers for all those suffering from this terrible disease and their families too.

How did Muhammad Ali get away with calling Joe a “Gorilla”, can you imagine the firestorm if a white person called him that?

Would seem as the life expectancy increases we’d see more delimitating diseases. When I was a kid in the 50s and rely 60s don’t remember hearing much about alzhiemers. Intuition, not science I know.

I believe that people who had it before were just described as senile.

I suspect that Lou Gehrig's Disease and Legionnaire's disease were around before they could be specifically diagnosed.

Thanx. Never heard about legionnaires until some convention outbreak in I think Atlantic City. Wasn’t that over 30 years ago?

I guess senile is not PC anymore. I think in my abnormal psych class in the 7os, they said “Organic Brain Syndrome.”

The man could throw a punch - I despised Ali for the way he treated Joe.

Ali vs. Frazier I was the biggest sporting event of all-time in terms of cross -over interest for non-sports fans. It was a cultural battle as well. Liberals and anti-Vietnamers were for Ali, while Frazier was the choice for conservative America.

That’s right, so-called racist America embraced Frazier, and he embraced the role of a proud American. It was great to see Ali get his jaw broken by the man he disgracefully insulted.

A few years later, Foreman took on the same role as Frazier, but Ali stopped him. (I’ve read that Ali was a Reagan supporter during the 80’s.)

Frazier has had a tough go of out since then. Hope he survives this.

IIRC, Ken Norton broke Ali’s jaw

I think it’s a question of people living longer and becoming more susceptible to cancer. The extension of our life expectancy has more to do with people surviving childbirth and childhood diseases and, of course, medical advances. So it makes sense that there’d be more cancers in later life.

With those medical advances, more people are finding cancers in their early stages while still treatable. Late last year a CT scan found a ‘mass’ on my husband’s kidney. Miraculously, tho cancer, it was stage 1; within 2 months he’d had the surgery, and doctor told him “see you in a year.” That would not have happened a few short years ago.

Eventually the day will come that most cancers can be found early and/or eradicated altogether, expanding even farther our life expectancy.
