While Newt Gingrich has come out on top (24%) in a new CNN Poll released late Monday afternoon, Herman Cain has begun to show signs of a comeback after allegations of improper behavior set back his campaign earlier in the month.

Mr. Cain has gained 3 points since a November 11-13 CNN poll and now stands at 17%. Mitt Romney, who has not been facing any accusations of scandal or major gaffes, has accelerated his fall in the polls from 26% in late October, to 24% in the November 11-13 poll, to 20% in the current CNN poll. This puts Mr. Cain back within the margin of error with Mr. Romney.

Cains numbers begin to go back up (now at 17%) after the "scandal". Romney at 20% and falling before the MSM even attacks. We will see how Newt survives his turn as the target.

Nice to finally have a poll that can't be attacked by the Cain haters as :

"That is an old poll before the allegations hit" "That is a straw poll, it does not count" "That poll had some of its early polling done before the scandal was in full force"

So what excuse do you have this time?

I could handle a Cain v. Gingrich contest.

Would Trump pull votes away from anyone? Nice if they pulled from Romney.

He’d get the Coonskin Cap crowd.

What move? Is he going to denounce his support for taxpayer funding for illegals?

Face it, he blew it.

perhaps the polls are just coming back to reality, and Herman was never badly damaged.

According to this CNN poll, 67% of Republicans might change their minds and support a different candidate.

Semantics aside. That is consistent with the Rasmussen finding from last week that 70% of Republicans haven't made a final decision on what candidate they will support.

Why would Cain supporters need an “excuse” for a poll that shows the candidate they support still in the top tier and beginning to rebuild support?

Did you think a candidate just bounces back up to the top after he’s had a setback and, in the meantime, another strong candidate was able to get a second look because of it?

I have no clue where Cain’s support will go from here. Depends on his performance and a number of other factors.

I don’t understand why you would you start a thread with an insult right out of the box, and one that doesn’t make sense anyway.

The reason Romney's numbers are down is obvious to anyone who has been following the polls closely. Newt is taking support mostly from Romney! Yes, Newt got some of the easily panicked Cain supporters, but Newt has had a FAR more devastating effect on Rommey. Suddenly Romney is fighting for his life in New Hampshire and California, while Cain is still sitting pretty almost everywhere he was before, and there is a good chance many of the spooked Cain voters will drift back to Cain over time as they realize that Newt has 10 times the personal baggage as Cain and has 10 times the issues that they disagree with him on than Perry.

I’m mulling what Trump’s statement says about his view of Gingrich.

It seems to me that it means something that, just as the race gets a new, strong frontrunner, someone like Trump announces he may still run.

I’m just not sure what it says.

Honestly, if a candidate goes through what Cain just went through for a sustained month or so — including the fact that a lot of the criticism of him was based on his lack of political experience and knowledge — and he emerges still in the top tier, to me, that’s a political miracle in any other contest.

Seems to me what’s driving this race fundamentally is the question of which candidate actually is the anti-Obama/Romney candidate that can win.

You bring up a point that is always extremely important to keep in mind.

I know I'm in that category.

This year more than ever the evaluation of the voters seems to be a strong two-step process: first, who is saying and doing the right things and who seems competent and potentially electable? Then secondly, stepping back and looking at the much bigger picture and how that candidate might "work" in that context.

Cain seems like a good guy. But somebody’s gotta get Cain to learn how to talk heart-to-heart with the American people - open-faced and honest. They’re (we’re) waiting and listening. Been doing so since Reagan. I think he can do it but I’m not sure he understands the value of it.

Newt is taking support mostly from Romney!

Dude!

Great attention to detail! I would have completely missed that possibility if you had not brought it up.

When you think about it, it makes sense that the GOP Elite might be finally getting the message that Romney would never be acceptable to the conservative base -- so they start thinking okay, Newt, we know him and we can live with that and, if we have to nominate Newt, we can live with that.

But that wouldn't be what is showing up in the polls, I don't think. I think you're likely right that it's "generic" Romney voters going to Gingrich.

Have to think about what that means for the Gingrich campaign and the race as a whole.

Very interesting post, thanks!
