They dredged up this questionable female, like the others, and she made false allegations. Herman knew his campaign would only be distracted by this crap and decided the best thing to do was to get out so that the other candidates wouldn’t have to suffer for it.

Oh...I agree on the part that this attack was planned....I think, though, that your assumption that Herman fell on his sword for the others is a bit optimistic. It would make no difference...
