Vanity

Need some help. I hope I'm in the right forum. Sometime ago, I read a comment about a book recalling the last battle involving the big "battle wagons". I believe it was WWII in the Pacific. I would really like to purchase this book. Hopefully, someone can help. Thank you, in advance.

The last big gun duel was during the Phillipine Invasion when the old battlewagons pounded the Japanese older battleships at Surigao Strait

That would be the Battle of Leyte Gulf. I read (or rather listened to) Evan Thomas' book Sea of Thunder which is excellent in that it describes the ships themselves, the strategic basis for the battle, the battle itself and the thinking and emotions of the commanders. The book is currently on sale at Amazon for $6: http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Thunder-Commanders-Campaign-1941-1945/dp/B001AQVTEE/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324255253&sr=1-7

The other great “last duel” of battleships took place in the Solomons in 1942 or 43, when the USS Washington took out the Japanese battleship IJN Kirishima.

Victory at Sea, by James F. Dunnigan & Albert A. Nofi, is a good read about the WWII Pacific naval theater.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf by Adrian Stewart (Charles Scribner’s Sons, Publisher) Among the chapters are: The Action in Surigao Strait; The Action Off Cape Engano; The Action Off Samar Island. I enjoy reading this book constantly.

Neither was Surigao Strait, which amounted to a nautical firing squad....

I’m amazed that nobody’s made a movie about Leyte Gulf.
