The National Transportation and Safety Board Tuesday released an interim report on its investigation into the 2011 air racing crash that killed 11 and injured scores in Reno. Deborah Hersman, NTSB chairman, said, "Our investigation found that this pilot in this airplane had never flown this fast on this course." ...
Before the crash, filmmaker Christian Fry had just finished shooting "Air Racers 3-D." He'd been a fan for years. Fry said, "It was one of those events when the minute you walk through the gate, you go, 'Wow, this is something special.' And I just knew that I wanted to try and tell a story about it." ...

nicely done. wonder what the next sequence will be..
Looks like this broken tail 'trim tab' might have caused the crash in Nevada. Trimming at LEAST 3 feet from EACH WING surely resulted in lift problems as well.
I will assume that you did not look at the NTSB material because they stated clearly that the trim tab came off 8-9 seconds after the incident was set into play. Therefore, the trim tab, which you keep pointing to in the picture, was an effect of the original incident and not the cause.
That may be true, but I don’t have to agree. Is this the same crew that said TWA 800 had a faulty fuel pump? Anyway, the trim tab may have broke long before it actually separated. It would seem to me that cutting 3 or 4 feet from each wing would hinder lift and place added stress on the trims, right? That’s my theory and I’m stickin’ to it!
Since the tail on a conventional airplane counteracts the lift generated by the wings, shouldn’t the shorter wings actually generate less force on the horizontal stabilizer?
Lets face the facts!
Some Unqualified and Amateur Butchers altered this P-51 drastically and fatally and No One including the FAA certified the drastic Changes!
Then a 70 plus Pilot (who might qualify as an Egomaniac) was allowed to fly it at excessive speeds that he braaged he would do, within feet of an unsuspecting and innocent crowd of Thousands!!
Thanks be to GOD that Thousands were NOT KILLED and MAIMED!!
And before You;al flame me, I am a forty something year Licensed ATP Pilot! I LOVE the Air Races!! Lets get some Brains behind them NOW!!
