The severe shortage of viable organs for transplantation in the U.S. has led a transplant surgeon to propose harvesting kidneys from people who are not dead yet.
Dr. Paul Morrissey, an associate professor of surgery at Brown University's Alpert Medical School, wrote in The American Journal of Bioethics that the protocol known as donation after cardiac death -- meaning death as a result of irreversible damage to the cardiovascular system -- has increased the number of organs available for transplant, but has a number of limitations, including the need to wait until the heart stops.
Because of the waiting time, Morrissey said that about one-third of potential donors end up not being able to donate, and many organs turn out to not be viable as a result.
Instead, he argues in favor of procuring kidneys from patients with severe irreversible brain injury whose families consent to kidney removal before their cardiac and respiratory systems stop functioning.

These Culture of Death stories seem to be coming along at about the pace of one a day now.
“I’m not dead yet!”
I know my will does not contain a specific Advance Directive, like this:
Which definition of death should apply to you?
A. Brain-Death.
B. Coma or Permanent Unconsciousness.
C. Persistent Vegetative State.
All this gives more latitude to *death panels.* Oh goodie.
This is why there is a great big “NO” where the donor portion is on my driver’s license. We aren’t China yet, but I don’t want to be the first guinea pig.
And this is a bad thing?
Needs to be out in the open and discussed...to maintain some control over how we die.
Do you have an advance directive?
FYI
I've always been a strong advocate of organ donation, but under the 0bama regime I can foresee scenarios where fat cat 0bama supporters harvest organs from the general population for themselves, with absolutely no regard for the rights of those being harvested. This is an extension of the Death Panels.
My point is they are so hot and heavy on killing us they are pontificating daily on the subject. They don’t want an open discussion, they just want to do things their way.
That’s standard procedure in China.
baraq and his gang worship China.
Though not dead yet, will someone decide , at some point, you are *as good as dead* ...from an ethical perspective.
This brings back memories of Terri Shiavo.
If he really cared, he’d have already donated of few of his own organs. But no, he’s at the back of the line with his fellow death mongers.
FWIW, we’re all going to die and having a smidgeon of control about how, is some relief to the inevitable.
You will see a big push and even coercion for people to sign DNR orders.
"I'm not dead yet."
"No, you're not. But you'll be stone dead in a moment."
When the Monty Python “we’re here for your liver” skit becomes reality, we have gone too far.
All you organ are belong to us.
You can see elitism in all their desire to discriminate against lower class whites by race, while they never changed the inheritance of college preference slots to the white children of the professor's and alum.
For sure - Americans can never give up their right to sue for malpractice with this amoral humanist bunch in power.
You betcha. Especially when Obamacare will incentivize health care providers to receive extra payment to give annual end-of-life counseling to their patients. Cha-ching.
But he still gets to vote. But not for his life.
