Horse racing was dealt a devastating blow on Friday morning. Trainer Doug O'Neill confirmed that his horse, I'll Have Another, won't run in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday afternoon.
O'Neill confirmed that news on The Dan Patrick Show.
O'Neill cited injury as the reason the horse won't run in the race. "It's his left front leg," O'Neill told the show. "This morning, he looked perfect. I took him and did a little something with him and after training, the swelling came back." O'Neill also said that the horse looked like it was suffering from tendinitis. I'll Have Another was looking to win the first Triple Crown since Affirmed took home all three of horse racing's biggest races in 1978. "We ain't taking any chances," he said.
"There are people who are going to want to slap me around, but I have to do what's best for the horse." O'Neill also told the show that he doesn't see I'll Have Another racing again. The horse improbably won the Kentucky Derby, entering the race at 15-to-1 odds. I'll Have Another then captured the imagination of horse racing fans by winning the Preakness last month.

But not unexpected.
The “Native Dancer legacy” strikes again.
At least he won’t break down on the track be killed.
I beg to differ.....just a few years ago a big house won the two first races and then “developed” a problem.....this stinks....
Which mob boss makes money from there not being another triple crown winner.....
Or maybe the deal is either share the money with us or something will happen to your horse....
"Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news immediately."
NYRA was watching his horse. The trainer couldn’t slip the horse a “cocktail.”
Nonsense! the Belmont still has wonderful horses running the last leg of the Triple Crown....I'll Have Another just might not have won even if sound....who is the 'stalker'...that is the fun of racing....along with the "sure things" bet the long shot for luck.
I have to admit I was a little disappointed that another horse won the triple crown so soon after Secreatriat’s breathtaking win (the Belmont...just wow!). I was hoping another horse wouldn’t win for several decades after him.
I’m very sorry to learn now, however, that this beautiful athlete won’t make it now. It’s been long enough for me to not be jealous of Secretariat’s limelight! :-D
The best Beyer was IHA at 109 in the Preakness. The only horse with a 3 figure Beyer is Paynter With a Beyer of 107 in an allowance race. Also had 100 in a Derby Prep at CD.
Paynter also should be considered because he could be lone speed. The only other horse with speed is Unstoppable U. This horse though has the 12 post and only has a Beyer of 82 making him a lot slower then the rest of the field.
Never bet speed in the Belmont, OK? (My good deed for the day, saved you the cost of a bad wager)
“Never bet speed in the Belmont, OK?”
Bad advice. Da Tara went gate to wire in 08.
Do I need to mention Big Red?
Affirmed went gate to wire.
I believe Slew went gate to wire(could be wrong on that one.)
You are absolutely right. No other colt in this race has put up one triple digit Beyer, let alone two. Paynter is from a Breeders Cup Classic winner and is a grandson of the sire of two time BC Classic winner Tisnow.
Great trainer, lonesome speed, runs a new top...take 7/2 and laugh all the way to the bank.
The Triple Crown is dead, no horse can win it anymore due to the breeding of the horses today for speed.
Outliers are outliers, as Big Red and Affirmed.
