U.S. Distrust in Media Hits New High

Fewer Americans closely following political news now than in previous election years

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' distrust in the media hit a new high this year, with 60% saying they have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. Distrust is up from the past few years, when Americans were already more negative about the media than they had been in years prior to 2004.

The record distrust in the media, based on a survey conducted Sept. 6-9, 2012, also means that negativity toward the media is at an all-time high for a presidential election year. This reflects the continuation of a pattern in which negativity increases every election year compared with the year prior. The current gap between negative and positive views -- 20 percentage points -- is by far the highest Gallup has recorded since it began regularly asking the question in the 1990s. Trust in the media was much higher, and more positive than negative, in the years prior to 2004 -- as high as 72% when Gallup asked this question three times in the 1970s.

This year's decline in media trust is driven by independents and Republicans. The 31% and 26%, respectively, who express a great deal or fair amount of trust are record lows and are down significantly from last year. Republicans' level of trust this year is similar to what they expressed in the fall of 2008, implying that they are especially critical of election coverage.

More broadly, Republicans continue to express the least trust in the media, while Democrats express the most. Independents' trust fell below the majority level in 2004 and has continued to steadily decline.

I had no idea.

So when CNN says its the most trusted name in news, it's really not saying a whole lot.

Moronic, oxymoronic that is.

I think the real take away here is that Independents' distrust is, reasonably closely, following the republican trend. Fewer independents are drinking the LSM's Kool-Aid.

That Democrats have a continuing high trust is to be expected - they are hearing what they want to hear from the LSM.

Well it is pretty obvious that there is absolutely no questioning or accountability of the Obama administration. The MSM is pure propaganda for the O. They don’t bother to hide it or pretend to objectivity any more.

THere is the big picture right there. What the Press thinks as to how the independents are going to vote is complete BS.

MSM better have a good story to tell come November 7th.

‘No one in the press saw this sunami coming...’

My only question is how many prestitutes are going to loose their ears pulling thier asses out of the Administration’s ass.

But if it comes out of the Ministry of Truth, it *must* be actual and authentic information.

Yeah, and monkeys might fly out of my butt.

At least we know we are not getting an honest shake. That is a pretty sad statement to the quality of the New media’s dishonesty when you think about it.

They are becoming So much more desperately biased that it is becoming increasingly impossible to overlook their campaigning for liberal.

I guess the real question is how do we get the truth from a manipulative pack of liers?

The media isn’t biased.

If the stupid ignorant racist, sexist, homophobic Teabaggers in flyover country were smarter they’d recognize that.

Yes it is. But, we can win with only 60 percent. Also, I would bet that a higher percentage of the 60% vote than the 40%.

When Bush told the public he was mistaken about Saddam’s WMD, it threw the non-Marxist independents’ trust of the GOP for a loop. That was much bigger than the Bushies (C. Rice who demanded he say that and stupid Rove who went along with it) could have imagined. Carrying out a war accidently... That will never be forgiven nor fogotten by a generation of voters.

Man, at least some independents are waking up to the other danger - Marxists. But they will always distrust Republicans like they distrust Marxists now. Americans feel burned by both parties. If what Bush said is true, they are right.

I don't think this matters too much. I see distrust from both sides. The other side thinks the media is too conservative, fueled by corporate interests, and views Mother Jones and Huffington Post as paragons of impartial media. So both sides distrust the MSM with the same intensity.

In other words, the 60% number does not indicate a huge groundswell of support for the conservative viewpoint of a biased media.
