Happily there is an alternative. Each posts’ number can be clicked on in a thread, and when this is done it reloads the thread right at the post you clicked on (whether it was your post or not).

Once you do this once though, for some reason it won’t refresh the thread again (show new replies) but you can also either just click on another posts’ number and that will refresh the thread again at that post. Also of course you can click on the “last” link in a thread with more than 50 replies (but that won’t take you back to a particular post just the last one on that page)

I click on the post numbers myself on he live threads to avoid loosing my place; it works well.

You can also do this:

In the browser's address bar, add the post number at the end, and then hit the star to do a quick save in your browsers bookmarks.

For example, to go to this thread's post #20, You have "http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/2950332/posts?page=18" in the browsers address bar. Add #20 to make it "http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/2950332/posts?page=18#20" Then save that bookmark.
