Sure they could, they do already. A new Confederacy would be very economically viable. And they would have a huge leg up when they escape from the weight of most federal regulations.

I cant see how the math would possibly work. Even in the red states there is 30-40% of the population that depend on the feds. Their economy did not support the population 40-50 years ago at the height of the American age without Fed subsidies I can't see any possibility in today's world a few sparsely populated red states (with the exception of Texas)can be economically viable as a separate nation.
