Record 18.7 Million Students in FY 2012 Got ‘Free’ Lunch

It is an old saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but a record 18.7 million American schoolchildren would not have learned that lesson when they attended school in fiscal year 2012.

That is because U.S. taxpayers—via the U.S. Department of Agriculture—were picking up the tab for their lunch.

According to new data from the USDA, during the average school month in fiscal year 2012, 18.7 million students in U.S. high schools and grammar schools were given completely free lunches, courtesy of the department’s National School Lunch Program. That was up from the record of 18.4 million that was set in fiscal 2011.

Back in 1969, the average monthly number of schoolchildren getting free lunches was only 2.9 million. As recently as 1990, it was only 9.8 million.

In addition to giving away completely free lunches, the National School lunch program also gives away partially subsidized lunches—or what it calls “reduced-price lunches” and “paid lunches.” …

Why the repeated lie with the phrase “free lunch”? Is it sarcasm?

The truthful phrase is “taxpayer purchased lunch”.

And I can tell you that at least 50% of the food ended up on the floor or in the trash. I personally witnessed, for example, students using oranges as ammo to throw at each other across the lunchroom and as mini-basketballs to use the garbage can for a basket. They leave a lot of food on their trays which go into the garbage (if the school is lucky) or are left on the tables or floors (if the school is not lucky).

Every year when my kids start school they are automatically given the free lunch sign up papers. When I don't return them I get a call from somebody in the system asking why I did not sign up..I explain that I'm not interested we will pay for our kids lunch..even here in Montana that response in meet with amazement..

Its easy to blame the government but I think if regular folks would start saying no to the government freebies we would all be better off..

Record 18.7 Million Students in FY 2012 Got ‘Free’ Lunch

And about 30 million more non-students...

You got those calls, because the Feds “grant” extra money based on how many students are signed up for “free lunch” programs.

Every school, untill this last one, I was assured there were no verification processes,or penalties for providing false information, so lying was actually a good thing, as it would help my child’s school get more federal money.

The designated local tax cheat enablers were always shocked when I told them I taught my child morality by example.

But we all know the look of creeping corruption.
That steady, vacant, wide eyed stare of semi-shocked disaproval for anyone who does not “work the system”...

Some counties have been offering free breakfasts to students too during time that instruction previously took place.

The Title should read:

"Record 18.7 Million get lunches that were paid for (forcibly) by Taxpayers"

I.E.; there is not "FREE LUNCH"

There’s a reason why the word “free” is in quotes in the title, of course. Nominally “free” is not actually free.
