Gadzooks! "26 Miles" is my most favorite 50s song

I had always thought that "26 Miles" was inspired by the 1947 Freddy Martin recording "Santa Catalina, Island of Romance." But when I was doing volunteer work at a cable TV studio, I got to speak with a member of the Four Preps, who was being interviewed as part of a program. He told me that he had never heard of Freddy Martin's opus and that probably none of the other members had, either.
