If you can keep an animal in sight (flat, tree-less terrain), they will run until they tire-themselves-out and you can catch-up to them. It depends on the animal, obviously. A wolf is built for endurance running.
When he was younger, Hollywood offered him star roles, and flew him to Hollyweird (during WW II). This was due to his looks and physical condition.
However, he didn’t like the stench of communism coming from the producers/directors he had met - sooo, he then took the opportunity to visit his sister and brother-in-law instead.
Seems he was going to be late returning to base and somehow got a ride in a Gruman Duck to the airport where the airline plane was being held on the taxiway.
Moral: Pays to have a sister married to a general.
A lot of Kenyans are in very good physical condition.

I have been attending the Boston Marathon for over 60 years.(It goes through my neighborhood.)
It has become a big bore.

Yes,...my hat’s off to them for taking him alive. they’re morally superior to the Nazi-Cops that we have here in the states that love to kill innocent animals.

There used to be horse walkers who would follow a herd of wild horses, chasing them from water hole to water hole until they could walk right up to the exhausted horses and capture them.
The word on the savannah is that they only win because they’re cheetahs.
I can see why you mentioned the SUVs.
From several other accounts of this event I read, I think the SUVs are involved when the runners were turning the big cats over to the Kenya Wildlife Service. I do not doubt the authenticity of the story. :)
I’m more disturbed that the runners were Somalis. ;(
