It's a sad day in Tennessee as Buddha, the obese cat who became an internet sensation thanks to his workout sessions on a underwater treadmill, has died.
The six-year-old cat, who weighed 31.4lb when he was rescued at the start of August, had made good progress with his diet and exercise plan.
But when a congestive heart defect was diagnosed last month, the cat was forced to stop exercising and instead moved to a foster home with a strict eating plan. He died last night.

Excellent animal model for US citizens.
Life wasn't worth living.
That cat had a Buddha belly!
R.I.P. Buddha
Sad story.
Precious kitties.
Poor thing. When I was younger we adopted two little kittens, one male and one female. After we had the female neutered, she bloated up, not as big as Buddha, but still pretty fat. She had a belly that would sway under he when she walked, giving the effect of a cow’s udder. She was in the 20+ pound neighborhood, but lived to a ripe old age. Her brother was a big ole tom, and he lived many long years as well, but was about as lean and sinewy as a jungle panther.
I’m sure the weight didn’t help the poor kitty but the article stated he was born with a heart defect. RIP.. kitty.
I’m not surprised that the poor thing kicked off. Forcing a sedentary fat cat to exercise is the same as forcing a sedentary fat man to exercise. The heart is already weakened by lack of strenuous activity, and clogged with blubber. It can only work so hard before it gives out. And a six-year-old cat is the equivalent of a 40-year-old man. I have a fat cat, but he’s a street cat who has never been neutered. He’s fourteen years old and in the prime of his life, as far as he knows. He gets his exercise by chasing squirrels and beating up other cats and yappy little doggies.
At the end...
All one can say, is that they loved him, cared for him, and respected him as an autonomous being...
If they did NOT do the above, then they must grieve with regret and remorse...
Treat your kittehs accordingly, despite their -human- shortcomings...
Poor kitty, he looks like a real sweetie. RIP Buddah.
Poor kitty. The idiots who owned him before and allowed him to get so obese are to blame, but they’re dead already—probably from some similar cause.
Watching that video of Buddha... he appeared to be a healthy, fat cat. Not to thrilled they subject him to that torture... leave well enough alone.
RIP, Buddha.
