"Make arrangements to plan for the unexpected," he warns. "Have extra food...have extra provisions involved. What are your communication options? They had a cell phone." He also stresses to have the following ready in your car: Shelter, water, fire, food.
Shelter, fire and water are fare more important for short-term survival than food.

Some people think I live in the wilderness. I guess it is a matter of relativity. Some can’t survive the big city either.

Nope, that’s why I live in a city. Even on a rare hike home isn’t far away, the nice part about living in a bowl, even if you lose the trail go downhill eventually you’ll find Tucson, then you can get a cab to your car.

I could survive here in familiar northern forest.

No and that’s why I never go to ‘the wilderness’.

Sure, as long as there is a McDonald’s within walking distance.

Yes. Of course there would be circumstances that would make it impossible but in general, yes.

Since I've never been a 2LT with a compass and a map, I don't get lost.
That said, I can survive and thrive in the wilderness. I've done the mountain man thing.

Hmmm ... I think for me the question is;
Would I Want To ?

To: smokingfrog
Probably not, but then I don’t plan to get lost in the wilderness. Not much of that close to where I live.

Two way radios and a whistle are great communication options in the wilderness. Cell phones may not work in wilderness area as there may be no cell phone towers.

Somewhat off topic but have you seen one of those BioLite stoves?

In the case of the Nevada rescue - at my age I would never have been in the situation they found themselves in - I hate the snow and cold and would never had made that trip to play in the snow.

He mentioned the “Rule of 3’s: .... air, water, food. Here’s the one I live by: 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food. Good friend of mine is with SAR .... when I asked her from her experience what most folks die from, her answer was ‘exposure/injuries’. Hypothermia kills in a hurry ..... I’ve had to deal with it before, personally & with other folks so I know how it works and it’s not something you want to have to face, if at all possible.
