WH: Don't tax Olympians on medals
The Hill ^ | 02/13/2014 | Justin Sink

Posted on 02/15/2014 6:49:57 AM PST by Rusty0604

The White House said Thursday that President Obama still believes American Olympians shouldn’t have to pay income taxes on the medals they win.

But a bill by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) never moved in the Senate. Three Republican lawmakers — Reps. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas), Walter Jones (R-N.C.) and Pete Sessions (R-Texas) — proposed a bill similar to Rubio's before this year's games, but it has also failed to gain traction.

Obama has a pen. He has a phone. Why doesn’t he just handle this?

Because he doesn’t want it to be anymore than a wedge issue that can be driven between him and his political opponents. It was anything more than that, he would simply make it up as he went along and everyone would praise him for his wisdom.

Why do politicians think that young athletes compete in
the Olympics for the money? Such materialism.

I can’t believe this, but I actually agree with the President on this. Why should they have to pay taxes on the medal? That is absurd. I would imagine most just save it forever and pass it along. What a dumb rule. I wonder who thought this up?

So Zero, will you include my wife’s bonus not being taxed, for her working hard and being rewarded by her company for her exceptional work?

They get cash along with the medal. But do you remember the guy that caught a baseball at a game and was forced to sell it because he couldn’t pay the taxes the IRS demanded he pay on it immediately?

This is really a non-issue since the sad crop went sent to the Olympics this year seem incapable of actually winning any medals.

By the way .... is anyone else seriously embarrassed by our athletes in general this Olympics? I don't mean just because they are losing, I mean ... they are mostly an embarrassment with their dyed hair, tattoos, piercing, sloppy clothes and poor personal hygiene, not to even mention the rumors of them “hooking up” all over the place.

I am MORTIFIED that THIS is the image we are presenting to the world.

I didn’t know they received cash. It is tragic to have to sell the medal to pay for the taxes. What a crock. We’re talking a very small percentage of Americans who compete in the Olympics and then an even less amount who win.

Well, you can’t just tax the hell out of a bunch of sponsored, pampered libtards calling for the UN to take charge and erase Global Warming, can you?

Obama ‘says’ popular stuff like this and ‘people should be allowed to unlock their cell phones’, but he has no intention of doing anything about it.

Oh, good God. What are you trying to do? Posing that question might do the equivalent of Austin Powers destroying the FemBots by planting a question in their computer brains that cause them to short-circuit...

So where were they in 2012 when we were taxing the medal winners from London? Or in 2010 when we were taxing the medal winners from Vancouver? Or 2008 when we were taxing the medal winners from Beijing? Or in 2006 when we were taxing the medal winners from Turin? Or in 2004...

Agree. If he ‘says it’ he gets credit for it. He would tax EVERYTHING if he could.

"Why should they have to pay taxes on the medal? That is absurd."

They should have to because I have to. I get taxed on every cent I earn working abroad every year and at the highest marginal rate.

If I have to pay tax on my income then the ice dancers and snowboarders should.

I'm sick of the tax code being used to pick and choose favorites. That is truly absurd.

I could barely watch the men's individuals in skating last night. In fact, I found myself clicking continually over to another channel which was showing an interesting program.

ALL the skaters stunk, no stamina, no grace, no fluidity, no creativity at all, just posturing and fluttering arms, stumbling and falling...and worst of all, consistently terrible music.

The quadruple is the new god...an entire routine is measured by it...it's a freakish, gymnastic stunt and has little if anything to do with true figure skating.

To paraphrase Hamlet...."to quadruple or not to quadruple, that is the only question".
