What a joke.
It boots up to their version of a desktop, only to go to THE desktop when you select something.
Pointless waste of resources and time.

I'm waiting for Windows 9 before I replace anything. Just like I waited for Vista to be superseded.

I Bought a new machine last month with 8.1. I refuse to ever again purchase any device or program MICROCRAP developed until they pull 8 off the market and return to an XP or W-7 type format OS. W-8 for anyone {any many are still out there} who must use dial up service W-8 is a nightmare.
MICROCRAP made several major mistakes with W-8. The put a Tablet OS out as a desktop OS. They installed CLOUD which can not be disabled. On limited speed and Metered Usage MICROCRAPS CLOUD eats up Bandwidth. The "THIS PC" Window stinks and is a PITA to navigate and figure out where they hid commands. The darn Font on it is way too small with no means to increase it.
WINDERS 8 MISTAKE should have never been released for PC's. Their answer is an 890 MB download. This Pig already in GB's has nearly triple updates and patches that XP had over it's entire life and they still can't fix it.

Try “Classic Start Menu” or a similar download

That only fixes the start menu or about one fourth of the problem. All Classic Shell does is make the Start Menu look like XP or 7. But still if you click on Documents, Video, etc it puts you into a Window called This PC. The Commands & general layout stink, are hard to decipher what is what, have them hid here there and everywhere and the Font is hard to see. Normal what used to be right click fast commands are gone. Even burning a disk takes the W-8 hide and seek peek a boo game.
Worse is the deliberately made it much harder to close programs like their X Box Music. Find the darn X to close it. The settings for various system functions are here, there, everywhere with no rhyme or reason except to make some people think moving command locations is a stinking upgrade. W-8 is Crapware. It is the worst OS Windows or likely anyone else has created.
MS proved with XP they could build a decent and reliable. The same with 7. But when Microcrap screws up big time they never ever own up to it. This is their worst screw up as far as PS OS goes.
Unless you like looking in this corner, that corner, or where ever all the time searching for things that were once easy to find Windows 8 Stinks. Some may get off on that thrill I don't.
With the IE I've had more crashes of IE in a day than XP in several months. Yea it's just wonderful. I also enjoy the few minutes it finally quits writing to CLOUD etc so then I finally get my turn using the computer.

Sorry about that the rant wasn't at you. It was aimed at MS. There was no excuse for putting out W-8. It is the Yugo of OS. The so called Apps chaps my behind. Master Gates will now Rent you some applications. That's B.S. Thanks to Libre Office I was able to recover some files that otherwise would have cost me about $100 a year to open.
Either MS needs to do better or they as a corp can tank on their customers dissatisfaction. Their choice.

WINDERS 8 MISTAKE should have never been released for PC's. But what they did was to require the major resellers (Best Buy, Staples, OfficeMax, etc.) to ship back unsold Windows 7 packages as a condition of placing Windows 8 on their shelves.
That means that you cannot just go out and buy Win 7 if you don't like Win 8.x
That's a marketing crime, IMHO.

MS must put something out every 2 years or so ... especially since they combined their home o/s product lines and their business o/s product line ... W8 is just this years “millenium edition” ... NOBODY running XP will “upgrade” to W8 , their computers can’t handle the extra overhead.

From the main screen, click on Desktop and leave it that way.

No offense taken
I have been using a surface pro since last June and I am still not thrilled with it either
now at work they changed our XP machines to Wim7. Italso has the “library” feature which still confuses me.

So I’ll take the other side. My old laptop running XP died. I bought a dell machine brand new with windows 8. $300. There is just nothing wrong with it. 2 days to get used to it and it is a great machine. Stable, fast, solid. Spend a couple of hours configuring it to your taste and it’s good to go.

I use Stardock’s Start8 software. $5 and I had my startmenu back, and set it to boot into desktop. Suddenly Windows 8 is usable.

Have you noticed the links in Win8 / IE don’t open?
Click on a hotlink and nothing happens. You have to right click and “open in a new tab” or “Open in a new window”

Have you noticed the links in Win8 / IE dont open? Click on a hotlink and nothing happens. You have to right click and open in a new tab or Open in a new window Yea and I've noticed more issues with it. Using Tabs which lessens the crashes means you can not tell what site you are in. I have 5 Tabs open all in FR. All say Waiting for freerepublic. In windows mode it will list where you are but it will crash if more than three are open. The most frequent page I see on Windows 8 says "This Page Can Not Be Displayed".
Another annoying issue that was fixed on XP IE8 but is back with W-8 is the disappearing typing. For example I'm typing a post and see a mistake. I go to it and back space and correct it. From then on what I type makes the text I've already typed disappear. It types over it. These are issues they have to know exist and simply don't care.

I am convinced that in addition to the monetary hostage tactics practiced by MS, they have huge faction of software developers who relish in F’ ing with minds for pleasure with PC users.

Their attitude seems to be you will like what we say you'll like or else. I can understand needed upgrades for security concerns but what MICROCRAP did in W-8 was make a format so dysfunctional for a Desktop or laptop that no one wants it so MICROCRAP is forcing it. I hope they loose their butts on W8.
