It boots up to their version of a desktop, only to go to THE desktop when you select something.

Pointless waste of resources and time.

So I’ll take the other side. My old laptop running XP died. I bought a dell machine brand new with windows 8. $300. There is just nothing wrong with it. 2 days to get used to it and it is a great machine. Stable, fast, solid. Spend a couple of hours configuring it to your taste and it’s good to go.

I use Stardock’s Start8 software. $5 and I had my startmenu back, and set it to boot into desktop. Suddenly Windows 8 is usable.

I know a retired NASA engineer that bought laptop with Windows 8.1 installed. A month later, he still couldn’t find his way around the stupid thing. He said he spent most of his time trying to find things, rather than accomplish any work. He was so frustrated and stressed that I was afraid he was going to have a heart attack.
