The Washington Redskins responded Saturday to Senate Democrats saying the nickname is a racial slur and must be changed, saying it is “respectful” to Native Americans and suggesting the lawmakers don’t have all of the facts.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, team President Bruce Allen wrote: “Our use of ‘Redskins’ as the name of our football team for more than 80 years has always been respectful of and shown reverence toward the proud legacy and traditions of Native Americans.” […]
The three-page letter—titled “The Truth about the Redskins’ Name and Logo”—references research that “the term ‘Redskins’ originated as a Native American expression of solidarity.”
It also notes that the team’s logo was designed by Native American leaders and cites surveys that Native Americans and Americans as a whole support the name, including a 2014 Associated Press poll that showed 83 percent of Americans favored keeping the name. …

On the list of 1,000 problems in America that might be worth time in the Senate to discuss....I’d rate the Redskins at problem #12,459 (ahead of fixing the Saint’s quarterback issue for sure). Maybe they could work on status of a defined ‘slacker’ or identify more swamp land in Louisiana to convert into national park status.
DemonRATS don’t need facts. They go by the emotional appeal and how many votes they can get by pandering to their base.
Good heavens. With all the problems in this country, the Senate has to stick its nose into the name of an NFL team? Time to put these critters on part-time - they have way too much time on their hands. And,this letter was a nice smack down to the busy bodies.

The football coach at WA State has a new book out about Geronimo. I think the book is meant to explain his coaching philosophy, but I couldn’t help but relate it to the Redskin name kerfluffle.

I guess the senate has nothing to do, like address the murder of vets, so they do more important things like protest the name of a football team.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. In a truly post-racial society, team names would be jokes. Redskins, Whiteys, Jungle Bunnies, Yellow Peril—they’d all be acceptable and the more PC by today’s standards, the funnier they’d be. Indians would be proud of teams named “the Warriors” rather than needing others to be upset on their behalf.
Hypersensitivity to any suggestion of offense means that the problem isn’t being solved; rather it’s getting worse.
