But one can be sure that someone made a bazillion dollars thanks to government funding.

I believe the former CEO of GM was hired by and works for Obama as one of his Czars.

I was talking to a used care dealer the other day and he says he won’t touch one. The sellers want too much and his added costs are just too high for resale.

"It just went away"
Technically speaking, that is correct.
But actually, the next generation Volt will be coming out soon. What they learned from the first generation went into the second generation which will go into the 3rd generation.
Meanwhile, Nissan Leaf controls about 40% of the world market. The Chevy Spark electric is GM's offset to the Leaf, but it is available only CA and OR, but is manufactured in Korea.
Next year the new Tier 3 lower sulfur gasoline comes on line so your fuel costs will rise.

There was a PPT presentation floating around years ago about a lefty conspiracy theory that held that the Chevy Volt was an exceptionally designed and efficient car, but the “powers that be” did everything in their power to make sure the cars were destroyed for good.

What you said may be true, but I think you may be thinking of this documentary ...
Who Killed the Electric Car? (Utube)
"It ran on electricity, produced no emissions, and was among the fastest, most efficient production cars ever built.
So why did General Motors crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert?"

The success or non-success of the electric car will be determined by the development of battery storage. Over the past 100 years or so, battery technology has been evolutionary not revolutionary. Consequently, there really hasn’t been a breakthrough. And, to my knowledge there isn’t anything on the horizon. Personally, while I’m ok if the propeller head class wants to continue tinkering with batteries I believe its a lost cause. There are other types of energy sources that have far greater potential (hydrogen?). Meanwhile, hydrocarbon based sources such as natural gas can and will carry us through the rest of this century quite nicely :)

A Vega is a classic compared to the Volt.
