Why aren’t we installing fever screening cameras at every airport checkpoint? (Obama doesn’t seem to have a problem spending money. Why stop now?)

Unless Congress holds an emergency session to expedite the impeachment of this Kenyan psychopath, I feel this Ebola thing is going to cause a MAJOR national crisis the likes we have never seen. THOUSANDS of people from these Ebola infested countries are ALREADY here and THOUSANDS more are coming!

Why would a US senator have to remind the FAA to do their job?

I would immediately ban anyone from Ebola-affected areas of western Africa from entering the USA unless under VERY tight medical supervision for the next year or so.

It’s quite telling that Ted Cruz seems to be one of the few politicians who doesn’t want to murder us all. It’s not that common sense escapes the Left so much as they are all criminal scum.

I really don’t see how this is the FAA’s mission? The FAA is in charge of all things aviation in America. Pilots, mechanics, aircraft, and airspace are examples. Ted Cruz wants them to monitor every passenger of every airplane headed to America from every airport around the globe? Ridiculous.
Start at the state department. Cancel all visas from infected countries. Severely restrict new issuances.
Customs already screens every passenger entering America. Give them the resources to deport I’ll people on the spot.

Since when did the FAA have that authority?

Thomas Eric Duncan passed 3 temperature checks. He did not have a fever when he was flying.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/02/health/ebola-us/index.html

Duncan was screened three times before he boarded his flight in Liberia to Brussels, Kesselly said.

“The first screening was at the gate, before you get to the parking lot. The second time is before you enter the terminal building and the third is before you board the flight. At every point your temperature is scanned.”

His temperature at those checkpoints was a consistent 97.3 degrees Fahrenheit, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chief Thomas Frieden told reporters Thursday. “Basically, he didn’t have a fever,” Frieden said, noting that the Ebola patient’s temperature was taken by a trained CDC health care worker with a thermometer approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Did he have a fever when he was screened probably not, but we should not put our nation’s health in the misplaced reliance on the accuracy of these thermometers.

Here is the truth on the use of thermometers in determining whether someone has a fever. I am a nurse and hubby is a pediatrician and this is what I know. Digital thermometers that measure temperatures on foreheads and in ears are notoriously inaccurate and untrustworthy for providing accurate temperatures and yes they are all FDA approved. The only way to get an accurate temperature on a person is rectally. When getting accurate temperatures, the accuracy of the device depends on its proximity to an artery.

This is why post operative patients have their temperatures taken rectally after surgery because it is very important to know whether they are developing a life threatening post operative infection. When our children were little and they were sick my husband would tell me unless you have taken their temperatures rectally I’m not interested in knowing what it is. Not a lot of fun for parent or kid, but necessary. Now it should be obvious why this is never done in pediatric clinics or in airports. But the truth is that unless a person’s temperature is taken rectally take that number with a grain of salt. Using the back of your hand is just as effective. If anyone doesn’t believe me, read the studies.

The the suggested thermal scanners would be no benefit?

CDC probably feels they are better than nothing and that may be true. Thermal scanners and other forehead digital thermometers read too low, so... in Mr. Duncan’s case his actual temperature was probably in the 98-99 degree range, still not febrile. Also, in the case of the Ebola victim with a fever of say over 102 thermometer would probably read over 100.5 ( threshold for fever) so in this case it would be helpful.

But, in the case of the patient who is just becoming ill and may have a fever that is more low grade...say 100.5-101.5 the thermal scanner may read a temp that is considered afebrile and be allowed to board his/her plane.

Furthermore, these are the thermometers that are being used in ER’s around the U.S.A. this makes me wonder if a temperature reading that was inaccurately low is one of the reasons Mr. Duncan was allowed to go home.

Yesterday, Rush mentioned that Obama changed the CDC policy in 2010 to allow immigrants from plagued countries. Does anyone have a source for that?

you can be infected for a few days without a fever

fever screening is not enough

by the time you develop the fever, you’re definitely contagious... but it’s also too late
