Hello Freepers.

Chickensoup is spending money again.

I have to do a tech upgrade. I am buying a tablet! The little ones that people use when they don't want to be tied to the big one.

So, I have decided what tablet to buy, it is an Asus Transformer 10inch. 64K and most likely with the 500 GB in the keyboard.

However there seems to be versions upon versions and no one to talk to. The nice boy at Best Buy kept pointing to the one he had and said that was the one to buy. At Amazon there seems to be an old version and a new version and I cannot really tell what is what.

I do know I want the full version of the Windows.

Has anyone battled through this before? Has anyone purchases this product. Is there anywhere where a nice young man will tell me which one to buy?

Thank you

Chickensoup Helping the economy singlehandedly!

Buy at Costco, Sams Club or similar stores. They have a return policy that is very generous. When they ask the reason for returning it for full refund, just say you didn’t like it. This way, you can keep trying until you find a tablet you like.

What do you plan to use the tablet for primarily? Web surfing? Reading books? Watching movies? Social media?

Asus seems like an odd choice. There are better tablets out there. Also, if you absolutely must have Windows, you are better off with going into the belly of the beast and getting Microsoft's Surface Pro.

Personally I prefer Apple's iPad or the Samsung Galaxy. For a casual user who will focus on multimedia and web surfing, the Amazon Fire has a lot going for it.

Trying to be both a laptop and tablet, it misses the mark for both. Slow processor and limited apps compared to Apple and Android.

But maybe it will work out for you.

64k... probably needs more RAM unless it is running DOS

I have the Asus T100. Believe wife got it via Amazon. Came with Word, Excel etc and full version of Win 8 (not RT).

I bought it for couch FReeping and using it right now. works great for that. Keyboard is small and not as easy to type on as a regular keyboard -— but workable.

Great value for the money except small keyboard does require me to constantly correct mistakes. Not recommended for serious work where I would use my desktop

I’ve had 2 Surface Pros and plan to buy another.

They run real windows apps, full office apps, haven pen/stylus (not a clumsy crayon like touch tablets), USB, use it as laptop or tablet.

Light, small, fast, reliable. Reasonable battery life.

Well worth the price, IMO.

My FIL has the windows Asus transformer and really likes it.

I have a 4 year old Transformer that runs android, I’m using it right now, the laptop is installing updates. Asus makes pretty good stuff, I am honestly surprised that it still runs like new after 4 years.

You will get a lot of advice on laptops but you won’t find a better deal than the Asus Transformer windows version. I really like my Android version but without the versatility full windows support and the 500 gigabyte hard drive.

I looked at the Asus transformer last year. After more shopping around and testing them out I decided on a Lenovo Yoga 11S. If you’ve got a Best Buy nearby I heartily recommend you check it out. I absolutely love mine.

Dell Venue Pro 8 is an 8” tablet running Windows 8.1. $149 on the Dell website. (or at least it was that price yesterday—it is regularly $199.)

‘soup:

Based on the information that you want a full version of Windows (not RT, tablet-only apps) I heartily recommend the Surface Pro 3.

The resolution is great; the performance is very good, and it works equally well with touch, pen (included), or the attachable keyboard.

It’s on a black Friday weekend special for $100-$150 off and, if you’re really into boosting the economy, there’s a separate deal for a 4k monitor and docking station.

I’m typing this on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10”, that I got from Best Buy. I like it so much I also bought the 7” version, to keep by my bed. That one replaces the ancient original Galaxy Tab I’ve had for years.
